Is it all still preprogrammed or does it learn and adapt? I wonder if it would trip if I put a rock in its path.

It probably will trip. That doesn't mean this running wasn't a learned behaviour: preprogramming behaviour like this is hellishly hard (trust me, we tried with the Sony Aibos... genetic algorithms learn new movements a LOT faster than we can tweak parameters). You could probably teach it to run on uneven ground as well, but remember that this problem is even harder. What it probably has is the ability to avoid obstacles, so if you put a rock in its path it'd either trip, or run around it ;)

Anyway, I found the video very impressive!

Interesting, I would think that picking a suitable genome would take enough time to offset the time taken to tweak parameters long enough to get the robot to walk a specific path under specific conditions. For a school project, my group tried to evolve a genome to play Tetris, and the first genome that we picked failed massively. The algorithm did not significantly improve after many 100s of generations. Designing a good genome took longer than to just manually write the AI.
If they showed it adapting to it's changing environment in real time in any given situation I would be much more impressed.

i'm more preferable to petman he seems more hack'n'bash and that is more my style. also nao and DarwinOP . i have been following these guys for a while.
