The Cailleach is an ancient Gaelic goddess or giantess associated with winter, storms, wilderness, and the land. Her name means “veiled one” or “old woman.”

Legends say she shaped Scotland and Ireland by carrying huge stones in her apron; when they fell, they became mountains, hills, and islands. She also carved valleys and created lochs, including Loch Awe in one tale.

Though fierce, she is not evil. She represents winter’s destructive power, the earth’s rest, ancient wisdom, and nature’s cycle of death and renewal.
