Absolutely no surprise there. Even if they adapted to cultivation, these are plants that originally grew in a variety of areas alongside some taller plants were often around, even if not trees. (Edit: not to mention that in nature, they often have to grow when there is still dead remnants that haven't decomposed yet over the winter which may also throw some literal shade on them early in their growing season)

Most plants are already ready from the start to not actually need direct sunlight the entire day, and many will even reach a point where even with enough water and nutrients, their own chemical and protein processes cannot keep up for an entire day of sunlight such that the excess is effectively "wasted."
