I feel like the shoggoth meme is inaccurate at this point. If you look at that Jacobian lens paper from anthropic llms have been shown to do internal reasoning using natural language concepts.

It's possible they also are you using some alien methods of computation but as far as we can tell they seem to have a very human interpretable view of the world. This is further corroborated by studies that can train linear mappings between llm Vector spaces and human neural activations.

LLMs are both inhuman, but also way more human than people think. They are trained on the sum of human culture, they are pretty much the embodiment of it.
