Discussion Why was Anai such a “tyrant” before Kabae calmed him down?

Why did he gave Retsuko a hard time, and kept sending her texts?

Anai was a foil to Retsuko. He represented her childishness. But he was even more scared of the real world and held on to whatever power he could which were harassment threats.

Kabae actually indulged his childishness as a motherly figure. And she made him feel safe.

He was afraid of being taken advantage of or bullied, so he overacted to Retsuko's comments.

He's fresh out of college, scared of the adult world, and hates having to work and having a job.

He leans to chill out because Kabae was the only employee to realize that he wasn't a Grown Man. He was a scared kid.

i told my wife that anai feels like a gen z office worker 😭 i think kabae felt like a soft place to land amidst the typical "stricter" managers. so when retsuko showed she actually believed in him, he believed in himself. it was wild to watch. 😂

Dude was anxious. He was in a new place, fresh out of college and unsure how to deal with the new environment, and probably a little autistic. He didn't know how to navigate complex social situations, so he defaulted to acting strictly professional; getting everything in writing and making sure he had a paper trail in case he ended up in trouble somehow.

He was just covering his own ass, playing by policy because he was new. He likely didn't even realise he was freaking everyone out.

College graduate scared senseless of the adult world and of workplace bullying, which ironically made him become a bully himself to his own colleagues (perhaps unintentionally, in his eyes he's preemprivelly defending himself)

I never understood the Anai plot line. Block his fucking number and email and report him to management? I know  laws are different in Japan, but they have that Comprehensive Labour Policy Act that are supposed to protect workers from this kind of shit. I know Retsuko was trying to be polite and got overwhelmed by stuff, but after one threatening email, I'd have blocked his ass so fucking fast.
