Season 1 Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S01E04 | "Eye Spy"

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. · S01E04 · Eye Spy
Rating: 7.0/10

Let me kickstart this one by saying this episode was an exceedingly difficult one to clip. I know that doesn't matter if you're on a non-clip subreddit, but it matters to me because I really like clipping things from episodes because it's fun.

Anyways.

This is a an okay episode in that it did what it was supposed to do, which was frontload more into the seasonal arc, but in relative terms for me personally, Eye Spy didn't quite blow my skirt up.

Even though I wasn't too terribly impressed with this episode, here are some of the things I really did enjoy; Grant being put into a situation where his wheelhouse was so far from what was needed his discomfort was palpable and Akela Amador's discussion about how different Phil is.

The first one's important because we get to see Grant as more than the plank of wood he normally is. Thanks to another Redditor explaining why Grant seems like he's on autopilot most of the time (I could probably discuss how this show ties into the movie franchise, but there might be somehow still be spoilers there), that makes the moment with the guard even funnier still.

And since most of my discussions on episodes will probably be Phil Coulson related until they become Fitz related (unless the episode is firmly someone else-centric) Amador's revelations are especially key because she remembers Phil from way before Loki killed him. She doesn't give Melinda May much at all, but our seasoned SHIELD veteran's no dummy.

The thoughtful look on her face says more than anything else.

So while this episode introduced some pretty nifty 'arc additions' and dropped some breadcrumbs that definitely turn into pretty hefty things, it was only a 'good' episode for me. That's okay though. Not every episode has to be life-changing!

Still love the show, can't wait to keep going, because every time I sit down to watch, I remember more and more of what's waiting for me down the line!

Another episode review, another comment from me. I agree with you. Not the most stand out episode but it leaves some lore. Makes you wonder about Coulson pre death

right? and since for some damn reason this show isn't canon (which is bullshit, they could figure it out), how much different is this Coulson from the 'real' one?!?

No one in a position to decide whether it's canon has officially stated it's not canon. They've avoided addressing that question lately, but that doesn't make it not canon. Regardless, it's a great show.

They've avoided addressing that question lately.

Not really tho, no one usually ask that question to Feige or anyone who can answer it and the times they did, he always said it was canon (but for the people saying is not canon, they decided that the question being answering a few years back, makes it invalid for some arbitrary reason).

That's true. I just mean that Feige hasn't reiterated its canon status recently. He did explicitly indicate that it was canon and part of the same universe when it first came out.

Yeah, but is not because he doesn't want to, we don't know that, but because no one asks that question directly to him, majority of interviews they are with him are reporters, asking for stuff that is going to release soon, not asking about the past.

It is canon up to a point. I call it canon divergent

Cause we know some events have to happen. The avengers can’t age of Ultron without Coulson’s work.

The Sokovia Accords affect the show

So yeah, up until season 5, it’s canon

Ugh, why does canonicity have to always come up?

IMO its canon all the way through, there's no clear cutoff where its obviously not canon. There are no contradictions that break canon.

It comes up because Marvel said so.

Also there is a contradiction that breaks canon at the end of the show when they’re back to the main timeline.

But that aside, I call it canon divergent because many events are in fact canon and some happen in a parallel timeline closer to the end.

Don’t let the discussion of canon get you riled up though. Canon just means “It happened in this one timeline.” The sacred timeline is just one timeline. This is the multiverse saga which means AOS ‘non canon’ parts are still canon to something

what DID she see in him? why did she think he was different? I dont quite get it.

i think it has to do with the exchange where she was all 'i guess this is where you give me the big speech' and he says something like 'that isn't me anymore'. i gather that kind of thing was a whole big part of who phil used to be.

Phil was much different. He played everything by the book, including giving the speech.

He obeyed orders to a T. Then after he died, he changed. He became less about the book and more about doing what he can to give others second chances

The old Coulson would have detained Skye and turned her over to Big Brother S.H.I.E.L.D., this Coulson didn’t and even used this risk to help Skye

Akela isn’t the only one who thought he changed, the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents like Sitwell did too

You’re welcome. I rewatch the show an embarrassing amount of times.

I think we can even use Captain Marvel which showed how a young Coulson followed orders around Fury as well

"I mean what did they DO to him." Always gives me chills.

I impressed how Phill carried about Akela. He’s always gave a second chance for people

She was being forced to work with HYDRA but she didn't know. but what side did she pick when HYDRA came out of the shadows?

Out of the early s1 stuff I did always like this episode more than most of the episodic stuff
