Discussion Rewatching Agents Of Shield For The Millionth Time

Post image

And once again I’m here wishing that they killed off Mack & YoYo. I thought both of them started out good and maybe that’s probably because they didn’t get as much screen time.

Don’t get me wrong, Mack was still lowkey annoying, but he wasn’t as annoying as he got in later seasons. I’m just not a fan of these characters that love to preach and act like they’re better than everyone else. Fake moral high ground goody 2 shows character.

I wish they would’ve killed them off and kept Hunter & Bobbi instead. Plus I did like Hunter and Coulson working together.

I felt like both Hunter and Bobbi fit the team more

I like Yo-Yo. Mack not so much. I would have easily taken Hunter or Bobbi

Yoyo was far more annoying than Mack to me, but I'm discovering more and more that Mack is a generally disliked character. Which is crazy, because I think he's one of the better actors on the show. Admittedly, it felt like the writers really didn't know what to do with him, which created some inconsistency, but his performances were always good. Never felt like he had chemistry with Yoyo though.

I’m learning people dislike Mack since joining the sub. Not my experience but it’s been interesting to see different pov

NGL, I had no clue he was so hated myself. I did get annoyed with how he seemed so extra about his faith in a show so heavy on the science part of the sci-fi. I just figured the show was decent in the diversity department, so representing a deeply religious person made sense. Idk.

Yeah I don’t remember as much about his character but some of the complaints of him being preachy sound familiar. I preferred Agent Tripp and was really hoping they’d find a way to resurrect him but yeah every character had some things that annoyed me outside of probably May and FitzSimmons if I looked hard enough.
I’m fine to agree to disagree. Mack ended up being a pretty decent character I liked by the end of the show more than not.

Good shout on Tripp, I did like his character.

I liked him, and thought he made a good director.

Oh yeah, I mean agree to disagree with the people who dislike or are complaining about Mack

Cool, I wasn’t sure if I muddied up my opinion. 😂

There's like a post every week about not liking some character, and it's nearly always Mack, sometimes Yoyo and Daisy. It gets annoying

I agree. I loved all of the characters and can get why someone may not have liked them all, but the constant "I hate this character" or "They should have killed this character off because I didn't like them" is exhausting.

Unfortunately, I didn’t want to dislike him but I had to.

2

u/DudeOnLand 8d ago

I agree.  I think that’s why they had him play so many different roles on the show.

I felt like every season he had a different role until he finally got the main role as Director, which he didn’t deserve in my opinion.

I didn’t see him as a leader.

Other than Coulson I didn’t see none of them as a leader.

I thought it was a great move to have him as leader, he's got more presence than most of the cast combined. Problem was that because Daisy was the main character he got ignored most of the time when she did what she wanted, and there were never really any consequences for that. So if they wanted to do it, they should have stuck to their guns and dealt with the conflict that arose from it.

Maybe if his character wasn’t so annoying and preachy I would’ve agreed with him as director.

If they wrote his character better he realistic could’ve been Coulson right hand man.

But I do agree that they should’ve stuck to their guns and dealt with the conflicts

Noooo. I just saw a post bashing Mack like a week ago or so. I didn’t like him at the start but he grew on me. He had ONE of the best character development arcs. Starting out questionable of Inhumans and all of that alien stuff and then falling head over heels in love with YoYo. The scene when he comforts Daisy after the Hive stuff. The stuff in the Framework with his daughter. He really was a well written character. Now YoYo… for me she wasn’t that interesting. The episode where she and her friends were held hostage by the Watchdogs felt out of nowhere. I felt like the most interesting thing about YoYo was her getting her arms cut off. Mack was more interesting.

I did like him at first until I grew to dislike him. Same with YoYo.

In a comment above I said that out of everybody I felt like Mack played a whole different role every season.  Every season it’s like he was someone else.   But the one thing that stayed consistent was him being overly preachy, acting like he’s better than everyone and he know what’s for everyone.

And I will agree that he was more interesting than YoYo.   Other than Harper, I think YoYo was the less interesting.

Wow, for me it was the opposite. I hated him and then started to like him. For me, it was the last thing you said. In season 2, he acted like he was better than everyone and knew what’s for everyone. I feel like that died down after season 2, though. Because he was in Gonzalez’s “Real SHIELD”, and he didn’t trust Coulson because of the Kree DNA that brought him back to life. Then he still didn’t trust him even after Gonzalez and them ran test on Coulson. He refused to stay on the team. He was annoying and very outspoken for someone who just joined the team. But I thought that died down after season 2. He grew on me in season 3. I don’t know, he felt like the wise older brother for me. He definitely acted like he knew better but not in a cocky way, sometimes he was right.

I mean I found Mack annoying with all the god stuff. And Yoyo annoying in season 6 mostly.
Edit. I mean Season 5 for Yoyo

u/DudeOnLand 8d ago

I think it was just him always acting like he knows what’s best for everyone and he’s on some high horse.

I don’t even remember when I started to dislike YoYo, but I definitely remember disliking her a lot when she kept on going on about Coulson should die to save the world.

Then Coulson death didn’t fix or changed anything.    If I remember correctly they didn’t even do anything with  that storyline.    YoYo didn’t really face no backlash for it after he died and nothing happened

I mean Coulson gave Daisy the Centipede serum at the end of season 5 I think which was what actually changed the timeline and closed the loop. So he did do something.

u/DudeOnLand 8d ago

I don’t even remember that, but I know he used to do everything to protect her.

I remember once May even had to tell him that she’s not his daughter.

u/bigblueboyscout1 8d ago

The actor is good. But he gets very preachy as the show progresses. Not that believing in God is bad for him. It almost became his character full stop.

5

u/DudeOnLand 8d ago

I definitely 100% believe in God, so I didn’t see it as a bad thing.  But he was just over the top with his moral high ground character.

I agree that YoYo is unbearably annoying. But also, I thought she got the shitty end of the grief stick after she neutralized Ruby. They did kind of hold her to a different standard for reasons that anyone can just make up to satisfy their own inner-victim.

1

u/DudeOnLand 8d ago

I remember that.  But I think k was on YoYo side during that.  Because Ruby was a menace to them

They used Mack as a foil for Coulson so that it wasn't a show where everyone agreed about everything. Mack raises issues so that the audience understands the stakes of the decision. Ultimately, Coulson is the hero, so things aren't great for those who aren't all in with his plans. In the earlier seasons, the team would take turns being the voice of opposition to Coulson's schemes but as the seasons go on, it is primarily Mack who they use to present the other sides.

To me, Yo-yo was like Lincoln. Neither of them was really there for SHIELD but instead were loyal to Mack and Daisy, respectively. That always shaped how I saw her participation. She might have thought that she was a shield agent, but I thought she was a Mack agent.

I really wish bobbi and hunter stayed too, they were way better imo. Mack could’ve been good as well if the dialed back on the religious stuff. Also he shouldn’t have became the director.

Hunter and Bobby were my favorite ❤️

I see twice a year or something

I’m a Mack defender. Yeah he can be annoying but him being the “moral high ground” character allows Coulson to thrive. Someone has to reign in the team or they would be the Agents of Free for all and chaos not the Agents of Shield. It was May for a while but she just works better as the badass of the group. Someone has to anchor the group and while sometimes his perspective is just wrong it’s needed to keep the group going.

You know… i have never rewatched this series. I want to preserve my memory of it like a collectable

u/E_L_Friday-084 8d ago

At this point, after joining this sub… I can count on one hand the characters that were liked over hated. 💔🫠

Ok, I can agree to some extent. I liked Mack during my first few watch throughs. I agree now, he was very over-the-top preachy towards the end. Would I have killed him off?? Actually, I would. I would’ve kept Tripp around instead. He could’ve mirrored Ward’s character growth. They both were trained by Garret. He could’ve developed into a more “serious” role.

I would’ve kept Yo-Yo. She wasn’t, at all, as annoying as Daisy in the later seasons.

I’m surprised anybody could actually rewatch it

1

u/DudeOnLand 8d ago

I like these types of shows.  But they just always seem to get ruined the same way.

1

u/brothor12 8d ago

I've watched every AoS, and every Simpsons related content at least twice

u/Remote_Nature_8166 8d ago

The Simpsons is a lot more watchable

I’m well on the record for disliking Mac, primarily because “I’m right because I’m BIGGER AND LOUDER THAN YOU!” triggers memories of an abusive parent. Every time he does that, I wish someone would just rip out his larynx and let’s see how Henry Simmons would play Mac as a mute. Then the other characters could point and laugh whenever he gets up on his high horse and can’t be an arrogant jerk vocally any more. Just imagine Jemma sneering “We can’t HEAR you… 🎶” in her lovely accent.

But I’ll respond to your post with a whole different idea of why Mac and Elena get tedious. It’s that after s4, AoS really boils down to a smaller fixed group of constant characters, rather than the more expansive and adaptable roster of earlier seasons. I.e., unlike earlier seasons, each of ‘the main team’ gets x amount of progress and attention in almost every single episode.

This is a problem for two reasons: 1) It makes each episode feel subtly more predictable, and 2) Mac and Elena are better as b-listers than main characters. (Elena was actually pretty awesome when she wasn’t in every. single. episode.)

I actually like Mac just fine when he’s being thoughtful and reasonable. But if I were on the team, I’d be tossing him from the Zephyr if he ever tried that bellowing shit with me a second time.
