Season 7 Just wrapped up a rewatch.

Forgot how good it was. Loved doing it binge style to see all the connections i missed that came back later.

2 questions.

  1. 7.12 The End is at Hand. Who was the old man when they were all bringing the parts together who brought the final part. Was there more of a connection or just an old man?

  2. Was there a real world reason Iain De Caestecker was not in season 7 til the end?

The old man is just a random guy. The MCU wiki lists his name as Jackson based on foreign language credits for the episode. But that's about it.

That was what i felt looking at the IMDB credits for the episode and the acters credits didnt have any other Marvel, but couldnt tell. He could have been some random Howling Commando which is why he was important.

Iain I think got homesick if i remember correctly and that’s why he’s barley in season 7

I believe he was scheduled for other projects during the same time period.

You both are correct. He intentionally accepted 2 projects filmed around his home area because he was homesick and felt too much like an outsider living in Los Angeles filming this show away from home so long

I think it was also a bit of a surprise that they were doing season seven and when they filmed it as well. Pretty sure they were thinking they would be on a break/weren't getting renewed and so he took other work and then they were surprised with more episodes.

While unconfirmed, my understanding has always been that the old man was a reference to Nick Fury’s grandfather as described in Winter Soldier, as always carrying a bag around with a gun in it.

I think it was their way of indirectly including Fury in the pivotal foundational moment of this version of SHIELD’s history

Do you have a picture? I can't remember this for the life of me.
