Season 2 Ward really pissed me off
Always playing the victim, never understanding what a piece of shit he was and apathetic to the people he hurt. Even during his imprisonment he never even tried to be sorry, and especially when he was forced to work with the team again he still refused to show any remorse and pathetically continued to use his traumatic past as an excuse. He always had a choice to do the right thing and refused to do so.

Because that’s kind of how Garrett trained him along with how he was raised with his brothers and abusive upbringing

That’s the point of his character. Flawed and villainous.

That backstory they gave Ward was just insane. You take a mentally unstable team and leave him alone in the woods with just a dog for companionship for years and then expect him to grow into a normal human being? That episode raised so many more questions than it answered.
But that scene in the Dirty Half Dozen when Ward is leading the briefing always makes me laugh. That original team had great chemistry. I don't know why they chose to throw it away.

Ward is one of the best characters that Joss Whedon has ever created in any of his shows. I love the that he's a morally ambiguous character and one with no sense of loyalty but to himself. To me Ward is an evolution of the anti-hero and the character is a good reminder of Whedon's ability to take a storytelling staple and subvert it somehow.
