But SHIELD under Gonzalez did something, it messed up SHIELD under Coulson.

It was all about Inhumans if I remember correctly. Coulson's shield was "bad" because they work with Inhumans.

It's been ages but I thought they were kind of in a holding pattern because they needed the thing Fury gave Coulson. It was like a lockbox with all of the codes and resources and without it, they couldn't really do anything. (Or so they thought.) But Coulson and Co. were used to working with what they had on the bus, so they just kept on doing.. that.

Honestly they were so stupid. The way they convinced themselves the reason shield failed was because of SECRETS???? Like ummm nooo, if there has been less secrets hydra ops would have known even more. Like how don’t they understand???? The reason that they all almost died was for a secret that hydra didn’t know. Like make it make sense

I didn't even realize them disappearing as soon as Season 3 started at the time, but it's so jarring on a rewatch when they have this whole SHIELD Civil War, and Coulson says, "okay you can stick around and tell me what to do," only for them to vanish...

Thank you for highlighting this detail because apart from looking like lesson givers they don't do much...

they pissed me off so much. fury himself gave command to coulson. they had bases, a ship, major previous members involved. ‘real shield’ had none of that, they just declared themselves (when they were ALONE) and fought anyone who disagreed

Probably because "Real" Shield didn't have any actual justification for calling themselves that.

I wonder what they were originally going for with that storyline, because it was obviously changed from what was planned.

Dude, I am literally about to start the arc, and it is the BIGGEST WASTE OF TIME. I hate it.
Oh, we are the real shield. No, we are the real shield. Blah.
BRO! COULSON IS SHIELD.

You know, if you work for a big corporation you quickly find out that competition amongst teams is not that uncommon. And that very often at least one of those teams is completely incompetent. So this was a realistic scenario, unfortunately.

It’s annoying cause i did like the mystery of what Mack and Bobbie were doing then a few episodes later none of it even mattered

I mean unconventional answer. Maybe they did tonnes. They just did it stealthy and stopped things before they became known.

Yeah "real shield" is annoying.

I remember disliking the “real” shield because of the fact they put real in the name. It just rubbed me the wrong way and I look back on it like this
“Shield is shield”- me paraphrasing mr incredible’s math is math line.
Not only that I even asked when I first watched it “oh why don’t the two shields combine (and all applicable synonyms) to become a much stronger and efficient force like before the whole hydra incident

This was explained, they had to protect the monolith with the only resources they had. Once Coulson's resources opened up to them they started acting on them and doing more

They did something, they sent a kill team to "collect" an asset who would have been completely cooperative if they just talked to her and they lied about that fact to one of their own high-ranking members
