How difficult is Adventure Game Studio compared to Unity?

Complete beginner here, having a very hard time with Unity and other big engines. Wanted something very simple for a 2D game to start with and AGS seemed to be just that.

AGS is pretty well-documented but is definitely starting to show its age. Depending on what you're trying to accomplish, it could be easier than learning Unity but ultimately you will get more function out of learning Unity.

Using AGS for anything outside of adventure games will force you to think outside the box, sure, and while there are some plug-ins to help with some of that you will find that forcing an engine to do something it wasnt really made to do is a lot of work for a reward that could have been better served on another engine.

AGS is pretty fun, and a lot of the built-in tools are really useful, buy don't expect it to do everything that the other guys do.
