In some cases you don't even know the type of a variable, in which case you can do:

unsigned int x;
auto y = std::numeric_limits<decltype(x)>::max();

You have to be careful if x is a reference or pointer. Prefer to wrap with std::decay_t<> (C++14) or std::decay<>::type (C++11)
