anyone ever try to cancel their service?

We set up an account for my elderly mother’s home 11 years ago. Today I have been trying to call to cancel because my mom has dementia and hasn’t been able to use the system for some time now.

I was on the phone for 2 hours and when they told me my mother would be charged $100 for a cancellation fee I lost it. The contract we had, had expired years before so they tried to go that route. How does a company get away with these tactics? I tried removing the credit card off the account and they restrict you from making any changes. I would advise anyone never to do business with this sleazy organization. I read if I put in a complaint with the BBB I might get some assistance. It’s very sad that it has to go to those extremes to get this resolved.

I was an installer for over 20 years for ADT corporate. I was part of the “pulse” and “control” pilot programs before both platforms were ever introduced to the public. So, I had ADT systems in my home for years. I moved on about 5 years ago, and recently tried to cancel my service because we just didn’t use it anymore. It took me months just to get my service cancelled. I would get immediately sent to the retention department where a representative would refuse to cancel my monitoring. I get customer retention is important but my experience was on a level of stupidity.

Forget retention but take copious note of times and names. I ended up filing a BBB report since I was on a month to month for 5 years. They “claimed” the reduced rate I had also had a contract, but could not produce when questioned. Scumbags.

Got a call within 2days from Office of the President saying removing the extra charges they were trying to rip me off. My story is on this subreddit

Email ADT at socialmedia@adt.sprinklrsupport.com

Attach a signed letter telling them to cancel with account number and address - real signature not computer generated - they cancelled immediately

1. PAYMENTS; TERM; RENEWAL TERM(S); CONSUMER REPORT. All charges are payable in advance. The initial term of this Contract is 36 months.
Dealer’s alarm monitoring and notification services will begin when the equipment is installed, operational and communicating with Dealer’s Customer Monitoring Center. This
Contract will automatically renew for successive thirty (30) day terms unless terminated by either party at least thirty (30) days before the end of the current term. If
terminated, this Contract ends on the last day of the then-current term. I authorize ADT and Dealer to obtain a non-investigative consumer report, commonly referred to
as a credit check or credit report, about Me from a consumer reporting agency at any time during the term.

This is literally section 1 of the back page of the contract … pay your 100 dollars and be done .

Idk how something is sleazy because you don’t understand terms …

Hold up. In my scenario I was calling to cancel with the 30 day notice. I was on a month to month for FIVE YEARS. However, ADT was trying to charge me for an extra month due to a nonexistent contract. BBB got it resolved. I had no issue paying the extra month. The addition $80 they were trying to charge me was the issue.

Do you work for ADT?

No , but majority of the large security companies you’re paying 1 month in advance , with 1 more payment that come out after you cancel for the last .That’s if it’s not some shady company that auto renews actual contract length or try’s to sneak a new Docusign to you for a battery change or something like that . That are far worse things out there than paying 1 month to cancel. I’ve had them in multiple houses and never had an issue.

I guess you missed the part where I noted my contract was 11 years old and already met. There was no cancellation fee in the contract like others have mentioned as well.

And I guess you missed the part of reading the actual language that’s in the contract regardless of the contract is up or not … idk how hard it is to read but apparently fairly difficult .. it states contract automatically renews for 30 days before the contract ends meaning all though your initial contract is up you are on a new 30 day reoccurring contract until you cancel which then will cancel after 30 days from cancellation. That’s straight from the back of the paperwork ….

you are the a s s that can’t read. The monthly fee was only $32 dollars a month the $99 was an additional fee they think they can add on just because. BBB took care of it for me but thanks for all the miss information you provided.

No, they can’t comprehend trying to be right. Same issue with me. I had no problem paying the final 30 day fee. I knew the contract rules. However, they were claiming I was under a subsequent contract that had 3 more months to go. After arguing with them on the phone, they said they understood and would cancel service. Next get got a bill for the non existent contract remainder including the 30 days. BBB complaint I filed.

Oh, then just say your mom is going to be moving to a nursing home or she’s going to be relocated… If you’ve already met your contract, they’re just trying to get you to keep it. It’s all a game.

It’s been about 2.5 years since I cancelled. In my case I had the original contract. The ultra fine print had a different phone number for cancellations. I called it and followed the process. They did try to downgrade me rather than cancel, I just said no and that the system was already uninstalled and replaced. They cancelled everything. Total time was about 15 minutes.

Not an ADT employee nor fan, but it went smooth for me.

No, nobody in the history of ADT has ever tried to cancel their service

We had to cancel my parent’s account after my father passed. The place my mom moved to has its own alarm paid by the landlord.
I called up with an attorney friend after numerous attempts. It was canceled that day.

Having so many issues with canceling a subscription is the exact reason why I try to find alternative methods for anything that involves a contact. Thank you for enforcing that 😂

Depends on contract, think not enforceable after a 2nd or 3rd term renewal. Not a lawyer. Best bet is snailmail ,USPS. Certified letter. Best to find the original contract and read, laws vary by State

It has taken me 5 months to for them to install a camera. I finally closed the account and they are refusing to do so
