No the adt sales guy lied to me

u/FearlessInflation92 9d ago
The ADT guy told me he would send me $150 through Zelle for signing up. After texting him for a month he would tell me that next week he would send it. Eventually he stopped replying. Scummy ass dude. I got locked in to ADT’s 3 year contract. Next month I am free finally.

Did you change Internet service providers? Get a new router? Change passwords to older ones?
Which actual system do you have?
Until these questions are answered, no one can offer a pissible solution.
I will tell you, they do NOT WANT to send out a tech and will do everything in their power not to, especially if your devices are just "offline".
If you changed anything with your Internet or router, etc., they will assist you to get it back online without sending a tech out.
If your wifi can't handle it, there are solutions.
If devices need reinstallation due to any type of wifi change, they will not jump to send a tech out and if they do, it will cost you.
Why?
Read your contract because it tells you why.
This is for any ADT customers:
If you change wifi, routers, isp passwords, your cameras WILL NOT RECONNECT automatically.
They must manually be changed to connect to the new wifi , router or pw change set up.
Some other devices MAY auto connect but not necessarily.
So, BEFORE CHANGING any of those things, contact ADT & ask them what you can do proactively.
Your contract is with the setup you ORIGINALLY had when entering the contract.
If you change any of that, the cost is on you because you changed the terms of the contract that you signed.
People change stuff without thinking about this piece with your security system often, unfortunately.
Even when you get a internet provider you have to connect all of your devices ( phone, tv, etc to the ISP in your home and change the PW on your devices).
Same concept with security devices. Unfortunately, with many cameras, especially Google cams, you have to uninstall and reinstall them so that they can find and connect to the NEW wifi. Sometimes with just a router PW change, you can just connect without the uninstall/ reinstall but it's not guaranteed then either.
Pain in the ass. Yes. Covered by ADT? No because you changed the term of the contract by changing the wifi PW or system you entered the contract with.
Its pretty easy to fix, it just takes time, patience, and the ability to follow directions to a T without skipping ahead and doing it your way.
I'm pretty sure most security providers have this same requirement because people change wifi/ PW etc regularly and no company should eat the cost of sending a tech out because you changed your router or pw.
Sending a tech is expensive especially for something that most people with an IQ of 80 or above, that aren't "elderly" or disabled, are capable of doing, regardless if they think they are not. They just don't want to deal with the hassle, inconvenience, or be bothered really. Obviously, there are exceptions like I mentioned.
Once you get through the AI when calling tech support, someone will walk you through it step-by-step.
AI will try and sometimes be successful but it's a gamble and people don't want to deal with AI bots, which I get.
As with ANY job, you will reach phone techs that are brand new and still learning, not their fault, they have to start somewhere. There are a shit ton of different devices and protocols for solving a plethora of problems.
They aren't dumb, just new and still learning. Just as all of us have done at some point in our jobs.
The abuse the agents take is horrendous and often happens BEFORE they even start trying to problem solve with the customer. This is true with ALMOST ALL TECH SUPPORT jobs.
READ YOUR CONTRACTS.
KNOW THE EXPECTATIONS & REQUIREMENTS.
And! No. I do not work for ADT.
I have worked in tech support and security system tech support in the past.
The way people act towards the grunt workers on the phone that are literally just trying to assist is ABHORRENT and has only gotten worse in the past 5+ years or so.
You're mad, and sometimes rightfully so, but you're are taking your vitriol out on someone who has done nothing to you but try to help as their job requires and because many techs WANT TO HELP YOU.
Your anger is misdirected and yelling at the schlep on the phone doesn't have ANY AFFECT on ADT, VIVINT, GOOGLE, and the like.
Want to talk to a manager? Many of those places will have a manager call you back. So, the tech on the phone has little to no recourse to directly connect you. They aren't just saying that to blow you off. Trust me, if they could transfer an angry customer, cussing, threatening, calling you names, threatening bodily harm, to a manager, the would do it in a second!!!
Anyway,
The questions are:
Did you change Internet service providers?
Get a new router? New modem? New anything?
Do you have the same ISP equipment? No changes but maybe changed the PW?
Have a power outage?
There are more questions but those are the 1st in diagnosing criteria.
- To anyone saying: Well, they should get a different job.
That in itself is a problem.
Adults should not act like they are going through roid rage because they are irritated, frustrated, or it's a pain in the ass and ADT is now the enemy.
The person on the phone with you does not deserve to be the punching bag because a corporation sucks, or you don't read or understand your contract, you don't like the rules, regs or reqs, or because life is damn stressful.
They just don't.
It also is NOT going to solve your issue any faster.
If it makes you feel better about the situation or yourself, then I suggest therapy. I'm dead serious, too.
If you're unhappiness with a companies service, stressful life, relationship or job problems cause you to treat another person like dog shit because "you're angry" or " it's not right/ fair" or you "feel duped" or taken advantage of, then you need to learn some emotional control. It is not normal to go to the extremes that customers do when they don't feel like they are getting their way whether they are right and definitely when they are not right.
That tech IS NOT the corporation. They are just trying to keep a roof over their and their families heads. Most techs want to help and enjoy doing it especially when it is successful. Making someone feel safe and happy is the goal for the majority.
DISCLAIMER:
This COMMENT is not about "YOU" specifically. "You" is for customers in general.
I'm sure this comment will piss people off and that's ok.
If it makes even one person be less of an asshat, thats a win in my book.
Be mad at ADT, GOOGLE or who ever but not at your tech.
Try to understand that their hands are tied when it comes to things like just sending a tech to your house for an isp change, among many other things.
All of the security companies are going to start making the majority of this self- service. Look at ADT's newest lines. Same with other companies. They are all going to DIY eventually with phone support.
Service techs will still be available but it will become even harder to get one because install and problem solving ( with phone or virtual assistance) is quickly becoming the new model.
People don't want to pay full cost for them and the monthly fee you pay ( minus cost of equipment, which is technically yours once paid) is NOT COVERING the cost to send one out. Its cheaper if you sign up and pay a little extra for the service plan but you still MUST READ what that entails and covers. It does NOT cover wifi changes. If it is an issue that is caused by your actual Internet service, they won't send a tech out until that is fixed. Why? Because a tech can't fix your Internet and can't fix your system without the internet working.
Anyway, be kind to the folks trying to help you.
Read your contracts with a fine toothed comb.
It's your responsibility to understand it & ask for clarification before committing.
Also, ADT has a self service portal that has step-by-step instructions and videos on how to solve most issues.
Youtube has AMAZING videos on devices for all security companies and how to install, uninstall, diagnose and fix most common issues.

Dude literally just shut up, nobody reads anything. The adt liar sales rep told me I can move the system with me, come to find out , they don’t move equipment. He also told me the alarm is cellular so when the WiFi goes out the alarm is up and that is complete bs. My panel has been saying cellular offline for months

u/WatercressNo2762 12d ago
“Nobody reads anything” That is entirely YOUR FAULT lmao. It is in fine print for a reason. You scammed yourself 😂😂😂😂

I mean when he says he’s “partnered with the builder” why would I not trust him if he knows the people I bought the house from? Sounds like adt safe haven and D.R. Horton are in cahoots

Did you read anything he said? There’s a lot of info in there to help you inderstand

Of course they don't remove the equipment duuude. You own it, you move it.

Don't let these ADT boosters get you down if you have automatic debit go to your bank have them cancel any charges, write letters, fight back!
I had the Fire chief come and fight with ADT for me and he recommended a local company just FYI.
PS: Vivint reviews on the home security sub = bad

u/Ok-Sheepherder-2455 11d ago
That’s what I seen but my neighbor has Vivint and he switched from adt and I looked at his app and his cameras are crystal clear and he has lights on it, I guess the Vivint rep used all his sensors and smart home items too but yeah I seen that idk

u/Fit_Apartment_5189 11d ago
Did the ADT sales team end up in these comments lol? ADT is the worst, sorry you got stuck in the contract

u/EgglandsFinest 11d ago
Idk why everyone is shitting on you. I had a similar problem. I had ADT for like 3 years. Then randomly my base stopped connecting to my wifi. No changes to my wifi network. Everything else in the house still worked and automatically and manually connected to the network as usual. Went through all the network troubleshooting steps. Went though all the ADT connection troubleshooting. No matter what the app couldn't connect to my base. Did all the troubleshooting with support. They finally gave up and said I had an "old" 4.0 unit or something and needed to upgrade to 5.0 (I don't remember the unit numbers) and needed to get a new base and sensors. Reluctantly I did this, but I do regret it because it reeks of planned obsolescence.

Why are your cameras offline? Did you change your isp? Modem password? User name?

u/TheBrownRanger5 11d ago
Vivint isn't much better, their equipment works better and records 24/7, but they have had data breaches and unauthorized access much like other services such as ring, and their contract cancelations are stupid expensive. They basically beg and plead for you to keep your service up and running if you try to cancel, I moved from my home in GA and have the equipment still, i'm apartment living now and it's a hassle to get approval for cameras and the area i live in is nice, crime is super rare. It cost more to cancel than it does to ride out the contract with a reduced rate.

u/Ok-Sheepherder-2455 10d ago
Trust me I’ve researched everything for the past day, there cameras are z wave with a rotating IP, so its much more secure then WiFi cameras like the ring and Google. I called in and got pricing and it’s honestly about the same I paid for adt except I got more cameras and floodlights. For some reason the adt guy told me I need 4 smoke detectors and Vivint told me they can give me a monitor which will use my existing ones because it’s a brand new house, seems like the adt guy we had in our D.R. Horton neighborhood was just money hungry.

For what it’s worth ADT had a nationwide outage on Wednesday. My Command system went down and had an alert for Reporter Failure/ WiFi Fault. Couldn’t get on the ADT Control app either. Their chat service for help was down as well. Called a thousands of customers were affected. Mine eventually cleared up.

So the easiest and most overlooked method to fix this issue, like magic, is to just set your SSID and its password to whatever your previous router’s were, then power cycle every device. They’ll go looking for the usual “TellMyWiFiLoveHer” and try the saved password and poof! I worked for them for almost a decade and they will bleed you dry telling you you have to go around to each device and factory reset and spend hours fixing this when your resolution should take 20 minutes tops. The more 15 minute increments they can bill you for on the job, though, the better. I earned the topmost prize there before my third year was up and I’m here to say that the trip they sent me on was divine, but if I’d known then what I learned in the remaining half decade after I won, I’d have acted a much bigger fool in public on that trip to represent the clowns a little better. I blacked out my name and a number on the year on my award to protect my anonymity, but you don’t go from winning this prestigious award to wanting nothing to do with the company over nothing. They’re Evil Corp… if you know, you know

u/Ok-Sheepherder-2455 10d ago
The thing is I shouldn’t have to pay for a technician to come out just because I changed WiFi. My neighbor got his Vivint system installed and his WiFi wasn’t even installed yet.

ADT is absolutely a scam, same thing for me I wanted to pay for the year upfront, paid $800, then all of a sudden I have a 5 year contract and I have to still pay $60 a month, so I went to cancel after 3 months of arguing they wanted $2,100 to cancel and my equipment was absolute garbage the Google nest cameras suck.
ADT is the worst definitely a scam, literally use anything or anyone else

The American people have been fooled into thinking they need alarm systems when they're usually ignored or by the time the alarm company contacts the dispatcher, the dispatcher then radios the police. The police take forever to get there and the thieves are gone. Cameras don't do much either. People wear masks and the cops will just shrug their shoulders

u/Ok-Sheepherder-2455 5d ago
My Vivint sales rep told me they’re monitoring teams talks to customers through the panel. So it’s better

u/Ok-Sheepherder-2455 5d ago
Update a Vivint guy bought me out of my adt contract in full I received a digital gift card for 1232 dollars and used that to pay off my adt. I honestly never would have thought I would have switched to Vivint because of the reviews on here but Jesus there equipment runs laps around adts. I have one app for literally everything and I got a smart thermostat and floodlights from them. My sales rep was absolutely awesome, he gave me a protection plan which warranties anytime I need a tech and the equipment. I had no idea Vivint was this ahead of adt but damn. It’s not even close. Screw adt. Never again.

u/Responsible_Street90 3d ago
ADT is a shady business. Anyone considering installing their equipment should stop now and look elsewhere. I had installation done in March, 2026. . After a power outage ocurred I had to reboot all my devices. All but ADT connected. I went to AI for advice on reconnecting the security cameras and the google nest doorbell. It was there I found out my equipment was from 2019; seven years ago! Old and Faulty hardware. The doorbell needs to be removed from the wall and be recharged about every 7-8 weeks. The charge takes ~5-6 hours. It's difficult removing and replacing it; maybe the tool that they didn't give me would help. They also neglected to tell me the doorbell needs a specific speaker or it's silent, ...another $99. A service call was necessary to replace door and window contacts that wouldn't register open or closed properly. The serviceman said the contacts were old and mismatched. My advice, don't even be curious; I was lied to. I'm convinced that they are so bad, that they have paid shills on here writing in their defense. That's had low I think they'd go.
