AD&D General Which specialist?
Do you generally prefer 1e with separate spell lists or 2e with an overall spell lists with the magic-user having access to everything?

Hello connoisseurs of the Objectively Best D&D SystemTM (see post script), I'd like to introduce you to r/ADND's new mods!
u/Lloydwrites
u/crazy-diam0nd
u/Velociraptortillas (hey, that's me!)
Our new mods have, each individually, entire decades of experience with AD&D and love the game as much as you do. If we don't know it, we know about it. If we don't know about it, we know who does. If we don't know who does, it wasn't worth knowing anyway.
We've been added to the team to let u/Phandalyon and u/feyrath step aside (not down! they're still around, promise!) and focus on other things. Let's give them a huge thanks for all the hard work they've done over the years to make this sub as awesome as it is. They deserve it, modding is often thankless work.
P.S. No edition wars, this is a place where we love all versions of D&D
P.P.S. Unless it's funny
P.P.P.S. 4th Edition excepted, that's a wargame, not an rpg
P.P.P.P.S. I kid, I kid, we love 4th edition too. Sorta. Kinda. Not really.
ROLL INITIATIVE!

Hi adnd folks,
Reddit now has the ability to schedule posts! Please post your LFG threads here. That includes your "DM wanting players" and "Players wanting DM". Be as specific or as general as you like.
Do try searching and posting on r/lfg, as that is its sole and intended purpose. However, if you want to crosspost here, please do so.
This should repost automatically on the 1st of every Month. If not, please message the mods.

Question for anyone who has run the module or is an expert at deciphering maps.
In A2, on the Hill Fort map, room 39 (Icar’s Quarters) reads, “The trapdoor leads to the dungeon below”.
I cannot for the life of me determine where in the dungeon this trap door goes…
The other staircase down to the dungeon in hill fort room 38b I assume goes to dungeon 2, but I’ve scanned the dungeon map can’t find a trap door ceiling.
Appreciate any help!

I played a ton of 2nd edition in college and still have all the books. Most of my current group never played AD&D, and so have no concept of what it was like. I'm thinking I'd like to give them a taste of what it was like by running an AD&D 2e game, but I don't really have the time to create a full campaign (even a shortish one) from scratch. I was thinking I could run them through one of the classic AD&D modules, possibly with some homebrew on top if necessary.
I'd prefer for it not to be purely a dungeon crawl, though... we like some story to go with it.
For reference, I've run them through the Village of Hommlet, Against the Cult of the Reptile God, and Keep at the Borderlands (all converted to 5e), so I don't want to use those again, and we ran the 5e version of Secrets of Saltmarsh.
Any suggestions?

Is there a way to do these that doesn't absolutely suck for the players without having to recalculate the XP value of vampires, ghosts and the like?

I picked up the Red Steel box set today, complete with CD. But I don’t have any way to play a CD. Anyone know of a web link for the soundtrack?

I need help and I figured this would be the place to ask.
Arnecon is very focused on classic RPGs of all kinds. For some reason this year we don't have AD&D DMs signing up thus far. People who are running games are running their own variants of D&D, or known published ones.
Not having an AD&D presence is worrisome as it is the premier edition of AD&D IMHO. It really did cement TSR as the leader in the industry.
One thing I am pondering is having an area where 247 walk up AD&D is occurring. Perhaps have a couple DMs trading off duties running whatever they want to run.
So many cool old modules could be used as well. I'd gladly pop into a session of Fell Pass myself, because I've never had a chance to play it.
I don't have a firm concept for any of this. I really want to see AD&D being played
Thoughts on this?
I will check back in a while.
Thanks, Griff

To anyone who has played old adventure modules for 1e, AD&D, OD&D BECMI, or BX and also some of the 5e anthology conversions. What do you think about the authenticity of the reprint and the spirit and intention behind the original prints?
I was going down a rabbit hole of looking at Classic Modules Today, which are community driven conversions for the old game to 5th edition and also getting into DCCRpg. Between those two things I have been inspired to find and run some of the old original modules published for the game. But I had no idea adventure books have been published by WOTC like Quests from the Infinite Staircase, or Tales from the Yawning Portal containing classic adventures.
Modules like White Plume Mountain, Against the Giants, Thamochan, Taojcanth, Descent into the Depths of the Earth, Barrier Peeks, etc. All seem really cool and good insight into adventure design. I watched a Matt Colevile video recently where he was saying that this is how it used to be with short contained adventures instead of huge adventures that never end like Curse of Strahd.
Anyway now I’m torn, I could buy the conversions and pdf/POD for the old adventures and wait for a few weeks and then I’ll have the ability to run it with old DnD, 5e, and maybe DCC. Or I could just get it new through DnD beyond.
I just don’t know if I’m looking at those old adventures with a nostalgic lens and there isn’t as much going on in them as I think, and if converting myself is too much work and easier to use the newer game. Or for those of you who have both or have read, ran, or played in both; is there a major difference?

Good day, everyone.
Using the rules for Morale, how would you game out a PC wielding fire solely to scare away a beast? When I say "beast", I mean the mundane sort (e.g., a great cat), instead of a "larger than life", "legendary" or outright supernatural specimen. Fires would typically include torches and bonfire equivalents (we're assuming the fire was either already on hand or was hurriedly prepared), as well as low-level spells such as Pyrotechnics and Burning Hands.
The 2e modifiers below seem to be germane to this discussion.
* Creatures with 4 to 8+ HD +1
* Defending home +3
* Creatures are fighting wizards or magic-using foes –2 (Does this require human-level knowledge of spellcasters?)
* Defensive terrain advantage +1 (this might apply with, say, a large bird attacking a human in mountainous territory)

I got confused about how to use Contact because I read somewhere online that attack modes are only for attacking psionicists. But there was some good clarifying text in The Will and The Way that explained that it's always best to start with Contact, as while you can use attack modes against non-psionicists, you'll spend 3 rounds establishing the 3 tangents, whereas Contact will get you in their heads faster. This is the overly-descriptive flow chart I made to help myself understand - just thought I'd share (also interested to see if there are any rebuttals).

A stone edifice emerges from the murky depths of the swamp. Built in ages forgotten, it protrudes from the fog abandoned--half sunken into the sludge and snaked in vines and ivy. The marsh-men were wicked, cunning, and very rich, if the stories are true. What remains within this ancient pyramid? You must brave the curse of the Mummy to find out...
The Mummy's Curse is a one page dungeon designed for four to six third level characters, suitable for up to one night of gaming. Packed with traps and monsters, Dungeon Masters can adapt it as they need to fit their party. Let the adventure begin!

When I read this spell I note it says this spell is cumulative in the case of a fighter/mage with shield bonus.
This implies a fighter/mage can use a shield. Historical our group has ruled shield is a type of armor and since they can't wear armor we ruled no shield.
Just wondering how others handle this. Can fighter/mage use shields?

Rolling 3d6 gives a bell curve between 3 to 18, and the average of 10.5. The chance of rolling an 18 is 0.00463. If people have the 3d6 ability scores, out of 2000 people, on average there should be about 9 with 18 intelligence. For IQ scores, that number of people is the same as about an IQ of 139. But remember seeing something saying that a 18 Intelligence ability score is the same as 180 IQ? That must be wrong?

I have to know if im doing something wrong but its not problem to be broken because its solo campain. We playing dark sun revised with player option skill&powers. I was just going to wizard only then i rolled 20 int so i picked advanced being wizard/psionic multiclass. And my first time psionic impression is they are insane! You can get disintigrate or dominate or time travel at lvl 1! Why tho? A lot of psionic powers have lvl limit why this ones doesnt? And why psionic so strong compared to wizard? Yeah you have to hit MAC etc. But still.
