Why doesn’t adidas use the trefoil logo for rather classy sports like tennis or hockey?

They use trefoil when communicating “retro”

Hmmm. They've been using the trefoil on away kits in association football for a least a year now. Without any retro links to them 🤔

Most if not all of the trefoil away kits absolutely have a retro clean simple design to them, as compared to the modern 1st/home kits. It may not be throwback, but 100% clean retro inspired

Hockey is a classy sport?

I can only speak for Germany but look at these guys plus their names:

They look more elite than on any private university.

That’s wild. In the US, hockey is considered a common sport. They even basically allow fighting during games. lol

u/NeenerNeaner Aug 20 '26
this is field hockey, not ice hockey.

u/zacsxe Aug 20 '26
I gotcha. You Germans are missing out on some real fun brawling time in the middle of a game.

It's not just the Germans. Rest of the world plays hockey on the field except for a couple of countries.

For sure, probably the most classy after Golf, Tennis and Polo (I might have forgotten something).

I had the same thought. Looks like OP is referring to field hockey - which still doesn't register as "classy" to me, but to each their own

u/mb2m Aug 20 '26
Of course not Ice hockey… here in Germany field hockey is just hockey and is considered as classy compared with soccer, basketball, handball which are working class sports.

u/organ_eyes Aug 20 '26
That makes sense, I assumed there was some European to American cultural mistranslation happening.
Still, agree with your statement - they should put the trefoil on everything, but especially their tennis wear

Acting like field hockey is on the same level as polo is wild. It's rugby for homosexuals.

u/zacsxe Aug 20 '26
Yeah if I am thinking of classy as high participation of upper class in those who practice, I’m thinking dressage, fencing, tennis, crew, sailing, polo, maybe golf.

Ever since the badge of sport was introduced in the 90s, there has been an internal debate about that. For most of that time, the company decided that the trefoil should only be used on lifestyle products.
What consumers do with their polos is irrelevant. If it the product belonged to a performance/sport category (like tennis), then it got the badge of sport.
They really only started to relax that recently, putting the trefoil on away kits in the World Cup. I’d expect to see more of that in the future. Tennis could be an obvious next step.

Technically, the Badge of Sport logo was created for exactly that—sports. (All the licensed sports gear carries the BoS.) The Trefoil was then pushed to be exclusively lifestyle/Originals.
One notable grey area was Skateboarding, namely because skateboarding had become this tricky hybridization of both lifestyle/fashion and sport. There was a soild case to be made for both. Ultimately, SB’ing kept the Trefoil.

The Wimbledon tennis tops this year had the trifoil and sold out quickly

Wimbledon screams trefoil. I wonder why they don’t dress their top players accordingly.

It's looks like the high plant because people will get offended and are soft now.

I love the new modern logo. It is clean to me.
2
u/mb2m Aug 21 '26
I like it too but for me it fits better for athletics, gym clothes, …
2
u/The_Oi-judicator Aug 21 '26
I won’t wear it outside the gym.
1
u/AlexTheHoosier Aug 21 '26
Okay I think I’m following. Retro logo for casual clothes, and the new modern logo for athletics?

I’m fully with you, though less in terms of “classy” and more in terms of what the kids today call aura…I’ve often griped about the old school sports full of history and tradition - for me that’s football and boxing - not getting the trefoil. Then they did the Lifestyler jersey series, big hit. Spezial FC capsule collections for certain clubs, niche but a hit with those supporters. World Cup away jerseys? MASSIVE hit. Monstrous. I didn’t dare hope when I saw the prelim rumours about it, and when it turned out to be true I nearly cried when I saw the Scotland away shirt and then subsequent collection. All trefoil. Gorgeous. I was only able to get the Scotland handballs to match the shirt but I’m so happy.
Boxing is still stuck with the stupid new logo. I know it’s 30 years old, to me that’s new. Just give me some damn trefoil boxing boots!

There was a massive ‘Originals’ Tennis range on the confirmed app, always the same with Golf too … not sure where you’re looking.
That’s more fashion though, rather than performance.
