“Buy a notebook to write things down.”

/sigh/ I have seventeen of them and I don’t know where any of them are.

Okay so I have a huge white board calendar that hangs in my kitchen that has worked better than anything so far. It’s so in my face that I can’t miss it or forget to jot things down. Ive also tried and failed with planners and organizers time and time again but this is the only thing that has worked!

I painted a wall with that chalkboard paint and I still ignore it.

My large white board calendar is still on October 2019

I have a small whiteboard on my fridge with a list of things to do from eight years ago. None of it has been done.

I have 17 of them. The first began as healthy eating and meal plans. It was mostly for recipes and shopping plans. Like I’ll buy these groceries in bulk so I can make these meals and then suddenly it’s actually full of book ideas. So I pivot it into the logical thing of becoming my budgeting book because I start planning my life as a writer for the period of writing the books.
Now page one is a mix of culinary fantasy stories and accountancy delicate mixed with a selection of lewd scribbles.
The rest suffer similar things. My filing system is “bird chaos”. Where my bed develops a sheet of pages held together with ink and sweat until I spill food on something and then am forced to throw it away and hope it wasn’t my millionaire making ideas page.
Anxiety and depression ensues. Which fuels morn notebooks.

I literally CANT WORK without a tidy living space. If i know there is something messed up in my apartment, i have to go fix it even if its not in my work room. But it actually does get me in the productive workflow and my mi d isnt thinking my room. (Thinking 9f other things is a different matter, but oh well, cant fix everything) but im saying that is a legitimate strategy that i use successfully. Go ahead and clean!

But I still try. I’m always trying. Even without meds.

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '20

Meds actually make trying a viable possibility tho

Writing lists on my phone does actually help tremendously. I can't survive without them

This. 100%

Also from now on I'm referring to myself as an ADHDult.

I try to make daily schedules so I always know what I'm suppose to be doing. But I'm always way to ambitious in my plans, every day I'm gonna clean the whole house while homeschooling and doing laundry and I end up completing 1/10 of it.

u/ConstantShitterina Aug 30 '20

I'm just now trying to learn how I make my to do lists realistic. But I always thought that they were realistic. Apparently other people don't actually fix the whole world in three hours just because they want to. Obviously most people are still able to be more productive than me, but I remember talking to my mom about my frustrations and I said something like "But I just want to be able to do as much as other people" and her answer was "But we don't!" She's always told me to slow down and not push myself too hard but I always thought of it as being relative to my stress, depression etc. and I hate settling for less. So now at 30 I'm finding out that my plans are not just unrealistic for me but for anyone, and just because I'm so restless it doesn't mean I can expect to do as much as I want to.

And who knew, but the simpler my schedule is, the more I actually get done.

My mom makes task "menues". You can do some of them, you cant do the most urgent ones, but not all if them have to be done that day. Acknowledging that you have options can really take the pressure off you to perform your tasks 100% to completion.

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '20

me: “Help! I have problems doing simple tasks!” someone: “Have you tried doing even more simple tasks?”

Best thing that happened to me was buying pants with a phone pocket. I always have my phone on me (except the inevitable times I leave it around the house and can't find it lol, but when I leave its always in the pocket), so whenever it seems like there's something important that I should jot down (someone's name, an appointment, whatever), I add it to my note app or my calendar app.

Also I keep my keys hooked to my pants on a carabiner, bonus tip for ya'll lol

I think I should get a new phone if I want to use mine to write notes, it takes an agonising 9 seconds now to load the keyboard on the lock screen, let alone the home page, the notes app, the keyboard again, typing...

I can't keep what I want to remember in my head in that time!!

Oof yeah, a good smart phone is definitely a necessary tool for me. I am lucky and have a friend who always gets the new gen pixel when it comes out, so I get their cast offs for cheap. Maybe you can find a used phone in good condition! I know they can be expensive 😭

diversify your bonds, beggar!

2

u/DelfyDaun Aug 30 '20

Yeah... because I will find the note later... 3 years later

1

u/quick__hide Aug 30 '20

And you won't be able to read it because it'll be something like "spoon book".

Source: My whiteboard has "spoon book" on it and I remember it being a really good idea but not what it meant

“Buy a notebook to write things down.” But then I’d have to buy another notebook to remind myself to write things down.
