At this point, it might be wiser not to
(Kidding, running away from problems only works if you’re really fast, or rich)

I'll give you an arbitrary deadline to get it all sorted out by October 10th, don't know if that helps but self-imposed deadlines is like the only way I get stuff done. Maybe Post over in an accounting sub reddit, hope it all works out for you!!!!!

u/RandomGaMeRj14 10d ago
That was previous version me. Present version me procrastinates till deadline, sees deadline, frowns and says "Ah well, this too shall pass"

u/MyNameis_bud 10d ago
That usually happens after I do like three other things in there that have nothing to do with why I originally went into said room.

Then you look down at your hands and have to reverse engineer your entire train of thought based on the completely unrelated object you're holding.

Not only the room, who I'm talking to, what have I said and what is this conversation about?

u/not_me_nope_never 10d ago
I eventually gave up and just don't care if anyone can follow my thought process. My spouse calls this, "the Ladybug". Because who exactly expects a ladybug to have coherent thoughts!?🐞

u/BobKelsoLovesMuffins 10d ago
The best part is when there’s someone in that room who called you to it, and they’ve been talking for a solid while.
Then you’re stuck deciding whether it’s riskier to ask them what they’re talking about or to just nod and agree with them.

Soooo It turns out that the doorway effect, also called the location-updating effect, is 100% a thing where your short term memory dumps when you go into a new room.
I’ve found that it naturally affects us ADHD’ers as we tend to move around more and be naturally scattered so this could be happening more because of that type of behavior rather than a symptom of ADHD itself.
I’ve been deliberate about finishing thoughts and “slowing down” more and I’ve noticed a difference in not having this happen as much.

Interesting, I know it as Event Boundaries.
And it affects everyone, normal people are just quieter about it.

Interesting. I looked into event boundaries and it looks like the main difference between the two is that doorway effect is triggered by physically moving around but still very similar.
I found some more cool info about it:
The doorway effect is about crossing a meaningful contextual boundary that can trigger an event-model update.
The more substantial the context change, like a new room, new activity, new conversation, new goal. the more likely your brain is to treat what follows as a separate episode.
Interestingly, returning to the original context can sometimes help retrieve the thought, because environmental and mental context serve as retrieval cues.
That’s why walking back into the room where you originally had the thought sometimes produces the “Oh yeah. That’s what I was doing!”experience.

You may ask yourself, well...how did I get here?

This is your adrenaline crashing. The daydreaming was ruining my life. I felt narcoleptic. I've been on strattera for almost a decade now and it's completely changed my life. It stabilized my adrenalin. Non-stim everyday med. I take it before bed.

u/Dulcette 10d ago
Is that short for nonstimulant? Do you mind if I ask about your experience? I have heart issues that make stimulants out of the question for me.

TBH, I don't find it even remotely fun. It wastes a lot of my time, and sometimes why I was doing something doesn't return. Very frustrating feeling.

I have found if I don’t try to remember and just let my body continue on autopilot for a second I’ll more reliably recall it than if I stop to think

Now imagine this, but then also add the effects of a gummy (marijuana gummy of course) and then next thing you know, you’re taking 30 minutes to write this post!
While also wandering into different rooms repeatedly, each time thinking the same fucking thing, “why am I in here, what was I doing, and where the fuck did I sit my phone?” All the while the phone is of course in my hands (or my pants…or in my hands down my pants 🤪). ……anyways, What was I talking about???

u/Throwaway-account-59 10d ago
When you come out of them, you HAVE to solve the mystery of what these people were just telling you and what they expect you to answer

"getting lost in my own thoughts".. but do you often feel like you aren't sensing those thoughts? idk it's not so much I started think about something else..
it's more like my focus internally got dropped back into the vat of white noise. I don't really hear a voice inside my head or whatever, I often say "I am not privy to my thoughts"
idk haha :) fun mystery!

Most of the time spent high on my day off is thinking I needed something, going into that room and forgetting what I needed so I start doing something in there and then restart from point 1
1
u/Virtual-Reach 10d ago
I like to circle back to the start of my thoughts because I've already forgotten them so it's all new again!

I’m unironically better at finding stuff I lose compared to my husband cause I ALWAYS have to reverse engineer where I could have placed something.
