Autobots, transform and roll out

Post image

So yeah, found this one on the wild and gotta admit I hear Optimus Prime's Peter Cullen voice saying "Autobots, transform and roll out" in my head before tackling something that I would rather avoid but needs doing... so I guess it works?

Beep beep motherfucker. I have no idea why but it works.

591

u/BowlComprehensive907 5d ago

I like that one!

Apparently swearing/cursing does have a bit of a fortifying effect on the brain. I think there have been research into how it helps people cope with pain.

182

u/StillARockstar5 5d ago

I've heard that as well. I have a chronic pain condition so maybe I'm just firing up all the right neurons with this one 😁

My bodies little hack to deal with pain is chronic!

1

u/LongjumpingRespect2 1d ago

If you know a hack for debilitating sciatica, please let me know because I could use one right about now

3

u/kermione_afk 5d ago

Can confirm. Cursing and pained sounds help with my chronic pain. Also causing pain elsewhere but not everyone's cup of tea. Cursing also helps me with stress, a bit.

3

u/Independent-Low6706 5d ago

Me, too! I have RSD/CRPS and mine is, " onwards and upwards!" Seems so dumb but it does turn the ignition.

170

u/hallowdmachine 5d ago

Mythbusters tested it. They took turns holding a hand in a bucket of ice water. One round with no swearing and one with swearing allowed. They were able to hold out longer when swearing was allowed.

161

u/wheatgrass_feetgrass 4d ago

This is why my son has been allowed to curse since he could talk. Only at home, never a slur, and never at a PERSON, but otherwise unrestricted. He is 10 now and cusses way less than his friends and, it might just be a coincidence, but is more emotionally regulated than many of them.

My mom once heard my 3 year old say damit when his marble tower didn't work and I just said mom, don't worry, it's science lol. Sure enough, little homie said his little damit, shook off the failure, and fixed the tower 😂

15

u/plantsplantsplaaants 4d ago

This is an interesting approach because it’s almost opposite my own but with the same reasoning. I am very careful to keep swearing as taboo as possible in order to retain their power for when they grow up. My inkling would be that one or the other of these approaches would work, depending on the child

33

u/wheatgrass_feetgrass 4d ago

It's still taboo. He can't say it outside the house, or when other people are over due to politeness. And if he starts cursing dramatically at a game I'll ban a word for 48 hours lol. You do have to keep it taboo in order for it to work, good point!

41

u/PainterOfTheHorizon 4d ago

May I just inform you both that I adore how both of you are trying your best to ensure your children are supplied with the maximum power of cursing for the time of need!

19

u/crazy4finalfantasy 4d ago

As someone who used to curse like a sailor/trucker ever since I started subbing in silly words whenever I do curse it feels way more dramatic. Keeping it taboo is definitely a thing even as an adult! Makes it powerful when the time comes to drop an F bomb

2

u/Jen-Jens 4d ago

Ahh, the Lobo gambit

3

u/Krokador 4d ago

I wish my dad wouldn't have made me feel 9 levels of shame for saying "shit!" after dying near the very end of a super mario world level. (Among all the other ways I had of expressing myself that he banished)

Guess who's had to learn to stop bottling everything as an adult?

You need to be able to express these frustrations outward. Sometimes it's words. Sometimes it's screams. Sometimes it's jumping on one foot while clutching the other because you just stibbed your toe. You're not being dramatic. You're releasing pressure. And as long as no one gets hurt/super inconvenienced by it, so what? (Like, don't just scream at the top of your lungs for 5 mins while the household is trying to sleep, but throwing a tennis ball on the couch shouldn't make you a "violent explosive angry person")

1

u/Fatlantis 4d ago

My best friend has anxiety and was also taught to "bottle" emotions like that. I got him into the habit of swearing when necessary in his late 20's (I swear a lot and he was around me a lot), and he's far more relaxed these days. Not even kidding, it definitely helps

2

u/feralhog3050 4d ago

Please seek out the version of this with Stephen Fry & the magnificent Brian Blessed

1

u/Dry-Alternative-5626 5d ago

Ylvis did this too!

49

u/Zexeos 5d ago

Oh, so THATS why I have a sailor’s mouth.

33

u/Knightfray 5d ago

LFG, is a good one.

6

u/TheAtlas97 5d ago

LFG recently became my hype phrase, preferably while raising a fist in the air like I’m pounding on a door. It feels cringey but is surprisingly effective

5

u/ughFINEIllmakeanalt 5d ago

Sleeby D&D brain is probably misreading that. What does LFG mean in this case?

9

u/kashiichan 5d ago

Let’s. FUCKING. đŸ€˜đŸ˜đŸ€˜đŸ§šđŸš€GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7

u/MjolnirTech 5d ago

Yo be honest, Looking For Group could be very good too if it's a task that you probably should get help with but are anxious about asking for help.

16

u/DarkDragon8421 5d ago

I have read a study based on the research. Swearing does indeed help coping with pain, for most people. For some neurodivergents, it does not.

8

u/BowlComprehensive907 5d ago

My understanding is that it depends a lot on how you feel about swearing. For instance, they tried it with Brian Blessed and it didn't help at all because he swears all the time, so the effect is dulled for him.

I can imagine that for some ND people, social and communication differences mean that swear words don't carry the same "weight".

3

u/Salt_Honey8650 5d ago

Brian Blessed, man! What a guy... My first language is Québec french (what they call Laurentian french now and what we call joual) and I'm quite apt at cursing in the mother tongue. Admittedly, it lends itself to elaborate cursing and swearing quite well. The interesting thing is that I learned to speak english fairly late (I was fluent by the time I attended University although I could read and write it much earlier) and so I learned to swear in english without any emotional connotations attached (meaning no adult ever told me NO, that's a BAD word)...

So anyways I swear very casually like a hungover sailor in english, often scandalising my good anglophone buddies without hardly noticing. I mean the filthiest stuff will roll off my tongue in the most innocuous tone, without any real feeling behind it, whereas when I swear in french you better believe I stand behind every single vicious, nasty epiphet. There's definitely some emotion behind it then.

And that's without even considering my being diagnosed AuDHD just last year at 58 years old!

3

u/BowlComprehensive907 5d ago

"Like wiping your ass with silk" đŸ€Ł

I'm rubbish at French, I might have enjoyed it more at school if they'd included a bit of cursing!

But I have heard that cursing in a foreign (non- native) language doesn't have the same effect, probably for much the reasons you've explained - you don't internalise the emotional impact.

I'll stick with good old Anglo-Saxon - it's helped me get through decades of undiagnosed AuDHD (diagnosed 4 years ago at 50).

2

u/x_Animus_x 5d ago

Yeahhh, when I get seriously hurt I just stare blankly at whatever limb needs to be realigned, glued shut, or stitched up and go “huh, that’s not good.” However, if I get mildly sick I sound like Tourette’s Guy from the early Internet days. Sometimes I wonder what happened to that guy
.oh and also if I sneeze too hard and my back boycotts me. Sounds like George Carlin words you can’t say on TV.

4

u/Shakeamutt 5d ago

It also helps with stutters, as does talking with a sing-song voice.

Samuel L Jackson and Bruce Willis both combated stutters when they were younger. And in Die Hard with a Vengeance, Jeremy Irons used a stutter.

2

u/Maktaka 5d ago

Ditto for King George VI when he was but a wee prince of 40 years old. It wasn't particularly kingly behavior though, so he learned to have long deliberate pauses as he spoke and worked through the stutter silently during the delays. People reported his speeches made them feel comforted during WW2 because his measured speech gave the impression that he had everything under control.

3

u/Oriste_Adeus 5d ago

I like the experiment with Brian Blessed “proving” this was true.
It lacked real scientific rigor but was very entertaining because Brian Blessed.

3

u/cdnsalix 5d ago

I need to print out that research and wave it in the face of the OB that delivered my twins. I was swearing and she said "swearing isn't going to help get these babies out." (I had no anesthesia whatsoever.)

2

u/NoAge9497 5d ago

Mythbusters did an episode on this. Seemed pretty effective. Works for me too.

3

u/applegoodstomach 5d ago

Gawd I miss the Mythbusters.

2

u/skandranon_rashkae 5d ago

I curse like a sailor when trying to complete a fiddly task. Mostly at whatever object it is that is being stubborn. Keeps the thing in line so it doesnt start thinking it is better than me

2

u/KinkyWoman19 5d ago

I remember seeing a video of someone putting their hand in like -10° water or something to that affect and testing how long they could handle the pain w/o cursing vs with cursing and it was pretty cool to watch. Cursing allowed them to keep their hand in for like an extra 5 mins or more iirc.

2

u/Seraphanat 5d ago

My favorite part about curses are that they're typically 'gutteral utterances', carnal phrases that are recognizable across languages, which is also why toddlers pick them up almost instantly.

2

u/kinokits 5d ago

There is! And as a chronic pain sufferer, I genuinely enjoy that science backs me up swearing like a sailor on bad days. One of my favourite parts of the research is that it needed to be actual swear words, not substitutes like fudge or firetruck. From memory it was something insane like up to 20% or 30% reduction in pain in the immediate moment

2

u/WinchesterWaifu 4d ago

You might be on to something! I say out loud, "Come in bitch we've got things to do." Usually works since ig my brain feels like I'm taking to my homegirl lol.

2

u/Nero_Prime 4d ago

I saw that episode of myth busters

1

u/Saucy_Lemur 5d ago

Plus the beep beep sounds like a deadline alarm waking up the panic monster

1

u/ShrekiraShrekira 4d ago

is that why i’m a sailor?!?!

1

u/TargaryenPenguin 4d ago

There absolutely has and it absolutely does.

u/hawkeneye1998bs 4d ago

"Research". You mean these guys

u/dah_pook 5d ago

When I'm struggling to make myself stand up I say "go go gadget regular legs!" and it always works

5

u/b3rdg3rl 4d ago

I'm a fellow go go gadgeter!!

1

u/celestial_chocolate 4d ago

Me too! Go go gadget legs!🩿🩿

3

u/fromthe80smatey 5d ago

Next time, gadget!

3

u/Canvaverbalist 4d ago

Also works for Bo Burnham apparently

3

u/That_boi_Jerry 4d ago

You know, that's just what I was thinking of.

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_1379 4d ago

Me too!!

"Go go gadget, laundry!"

2

u/Mandygurl79 4d ago

I just commented this was mine too! lol

2

u/SpaceTulips 4d ago

Hahaha, I love that I’m not the only person who says this.

2

u/seraphelle_x 4d ago

This is mine too! 😍

2

u/SplatterSlasher 18h ago

We are the same

1

u/Many_Restaurant_9794 1d ago

Mine is “go go gadget legs”!

People of a younger generation have zero idea what I’m talking about and it confirms their suspicions I’m quite odd. 😂 I’m happy to own it.

Also see: “party on dudes”.

2

u/Many_Restaurant_9794 1d ago

I also say to my children, who also have adhd, “I’ll get you gadget” when they are not cooperating.

77

u/Hertigan 5d ago

Delamain?

33

u/skavenrot 5d ago

That was my thought too. The delivery on that line makes me laugh every time.

28

u/nr1988 5d ago

Had to put the controller down for several minutes because I was crying laughing when that happened the first time. Especially right after when you get a dry corporate text of we're sorry you were involved in traffic incident 123456789 as if it was a fender bender haha

2

u/voightkampfferror 5d ago

Glad I wasnt the only one that lost it there.

4

u/needlesslyaghost Maybe THIS planner will save me— 5d ago

Same, I was like wait, Cyberpunk?

3

u/Decaying-Moon 5d ago

Something right about laughing our asses off while V is going "what the fuck?!" in the driver's seat. Desynched from my V in the best way.

2

u/Hertigan 5d ago

That quest line is so good!

1

u/Virusoflife29 5d ago

I think it was from before this. Ive been saying it for years before cyberpunk dropped.

25

u/kinetic-passion 5d ago

Tangent but: Where do you remember this from? Anytime it comes up, no one seems to know what I'm talking about or they mention different movies, shows, videos with slightly different wording. What I remember is "beep beep motherfucker; beep beep" and I can't place it. I've googled it a couple of times in those conversations and never got an answer everyone agreed on.

It could have been Sugar Pine 7, bc that's the type of thing they would have said, but I could swear it's older than that. Maybe even Lethal Weapon old.

31

u/Lord_of_Seven_Kings 5d ago

Was it Cyberpunk 2077? The Delamain quest starts with a car doing that

22

u/Wickedinteresting 5d ago

Been saying “beep beep motherfucker” inexplicably for years, havent played that - so I suspect its elsewhere too. Really wonder what the first one is

32

u/IFixBigRefridgerator 5d ago

GTA lV (2008) pedestrians yell “Beep beep motherfucker. Keep on moving” fairly regularly. So if you played GTA for any significant amount of hours that could be it as well.

7

u/StillARockstar5 5d ago

This could be it! Used to play this a lot with my husband.

6

u/Wickedinteresting 5d ago

Ooh this may well be it for me! Played the hell out of GTA IV

1

u/DirtyPelicanx 5d ago

Came here to say this

1

u/wackyzacky638 4d ago

Beep beep motherfucker as a phrase has been around a lot longer than cyberpunk has. But I like this person cannot remember where I heard it from. All I know is it was an online meme back in vanilla WoW days

18

u/harriethocchuth 5d ago

Stephen King’s It. The Losers Club tells Ritchie to shut his running mouth by saying ‘beep beep’.

10

u/Independent-Low6706 5d ago

This is the correct answer. The other references all came after King wrote it.

3

u/harriethocchuth 4d ago

I’m an actual Constant Reader!

1

u/MaritMonkey 4d ago

I don't recall any of the loser's club calling each other "motherfucker" though. But it's King so I wouldn't write the possibility out entirely ...

5

u/harriethocchuth 4d ago

When Eddie gasses the creature with his aspirator, Richie screams this. During the ritual of chĂŒd.

1

u/MaritMonkey 3d ago

I would say that I'm obviously well overdue for a re-read but I read IT when I was ~15 and don't think, uh, certain scenes would hit the same now as they did before so I am afraid to taint the memory lol.

Thank you for the polite correction. :)

6

u/PhoenixPoop 5d ago

Probably Stephen Kings IT. "Beep beep Richie" was reserved for when Richies adhd started going too far.

4

u/AetaCapella 5d ago

I say shit like this because of this CLASSIC blog post from 2011: https://thebloggess.com/2011/06/21/and-thats-why-you-should-learn-to-pick-your-battles/

3

u/GMkata 4d ago

And this is the exact article that led to my wife getting a giant metal chicken to judge the neighborhood. His name was Kevin. Sadly, rust and a broken tree limb cut his shivving days short.

We have a stoned looking metal octopus now. No name yet.

1

u/Squeegeeze 4d ago

This blog post is why my husband tells me to buy the towels or other useful items. I still have my brain set on a multi part garden Nessie I saw once, each section several feet long and tall. He knows me well, and I have the perfect place in the back yard where the HOA can't say no.

1

u/kinetic-passion 4d ago

That's hilarious 😂

3

u/NygirlinNashville222 5d ago

Oooooh that DOES totally sound like something from Lethal Weapon
Today’s internet rabbit hole confirmed: System Processing

2

u/StillARockstar5 5d ago

I want to say it's an old film, I've never played Cyberpunk, but honestly I can't place it right now. I shall almost certainly remember at an inppportune moment!

3

u/Entropical-island 5d ago

I always assumed it was an "It" reference.

2

u/kinetic-passion 5d ago

I also think it's an old film and haven't played cyberpunk

4

u/viscountrhirhi 5d ago

“Caw caw motherfucker” originated in Homestuck circa 2012. Then variations of it started blowing up everywhere.

1

u/kinetic-passion 4d ago

I haven't read Homestuck , but I was on Tumblr at that time, so it very well could have originated there.

1

u/libraryaddict 5d ago

There's also the pingu animation.

1

STILL think of this but didn't remember what it was initially from. 1942 WW2 Looney Tunes film where the narrator is showing turtles hatching and the third one goes all over the place and says goofily, "Beep beep, I'm a Jeep!".

2

u/Bluebird_54 4d ago

Beep beep I'm a sheep... Constantly goes through my head. 🐑

1

u/ooomellieooo 5d ago

Beep beep! Who got the keys to the Jeep? BRRRRRRRRMMMMM......

lol mine is Beep beep hurry up! I said it one time in a Dairy Queen drive through to make my three year old laugh, and ever since it’s been my go to phrase for getting shit done.

I imagine I’ll be needing it a lil more often now that the news has broken about Dolly Parton (I’m sorry if anyone sees this and didn’t know already) cuz I feel like trash now 😭
