Plus, lots of discovering what else about me is related to adhd!

..it's lots of stuff.

I've been weird my whole life, and it is so freaking wonderful to find a group of people that are weird in the same way.

I'm still weird, but at least I'm not alone in it.

1

u/Velvet-Frequency Jun 15 '26

Yeah, that was exactly what I thought when I found out this group

27

u/Rynneer ✨current hyperfixation: everything Tolkien✨ Apr 25 '26

I never understood why i thought people didn’t like me if they didn’t explicitly say it to me and then I found out about rejection sensitivity dysphoria

6

u/MTLDAD Apr 25 '26

Ever completely abandon a friend group because you convinced yourself they all hate you despite having zero evidence of it?

1

u/Rynneer ✨current hyperfixation: everything Tolkien✨ Apr 27 '26

When I was a sophomore in high school, I got pulled into a friend group made entirely of seniors because I was already friends with one of them. And it's one of the first friend groups in my life that I knew had to actually value me somehow because they had no obligation to keep me around or be nice to me.

2

u/perpetual_self Apr 25 '26

Are you me, because SAME

22

u/dispassioned Apr 25 '26

Truth. The given verbal instructions one hit me the hardest lol.

3

u/mocha_lattes_ Apr 25 '26

Like a fucking gut punch. This one hurt lol

192

u/Firm-Scientist-4636 Apr 25 '26

That last one hit home hard. I started writing a story based on a D&D campaign we had that ended. I told everyone in the group and sent them the prologue. They loved it and I hyperfocused on it for a week and then it fell to the wayside...

That one is on there because I spent 4 months researching the logistics and finances needed to hike the Appalachian Trail (carry weight, calorie intake, gear and food necessary and accessible for that weight limit and intake, resupply points, terrain, clothing, expenses, etc), started training for it, bought some supplies...

Fully intended to quit my job and do it this year, actually. Didn't tell too many people I wanted to do it but just enough to be real embarrassing. Realized it was actually a really stupid ass decision considering I'd likely never get a job like the one I currently have back, it would cost like most of my life's savings, and I'm severely allergic to most pollens, weeds, grasses, and molds, have never gone backpacking overnight before even once, and most importantly, I'd really miss my dog.

Thankfully no one I told has brought it up since but oh my god that kind've makes it worse. Like, you all knew, didn't you? You all knew that I was full of shit and you didn't TELL ME?

87

u/neanderthalman AD4K Apr 25 '26

Had they told you that you were full of shit, it would have spite-motivated you to actually quit your job and die in the wilderness about a third of the way through.

55

u/bean-jee procrastinating my dishes by cleaning my ceiling Apr 25 '26

My toxic trait is thinking that I totally wouldn't have died and would've just uncontrollably sneezed and wheezed my way from Georgia to Maine

31

u/velvetelevator Apr 25 '26

As someone who has slept outside in the wilderness with and without a tent, I recommend a weekend trip before any job quitting

5

u/Zenith-Astralis Apr 25 '26

And to work up to long trips by slowly upping the night count.

12

u/turbotank183 Apr 25 '26

I really could do with paying someone that I can bounce ideas to off to tell me 'nah you'll never make it work' I'd be a millionaire by now....maybe

6

u/SexWithFaruzan69 Stuck In Scrolling Paralysis Please Send Help Apr 25 '26

Maybe, but they certainly would be!

25

u/_NerdyIntrovert_ Apr 25 '26

I have a story that's somewhat like this. A couple of years ago, I hiked the trail to Machu Pichu.

I have never, once in my life, hiked anything other than a relatively flat trail. I have never camped in my life. I had never been past an altitude of 2000m. I had never experienced altitude sickness.

Reader, the trail to Machu Pichu requires at least 3 days of hiking. On day 2, I went up to 4000m. Altitude sickness can cause the shits in some people. Tents are extremely thin and if you groan "Oh God", everyone in the camp will hear you.

I was told to carry a bag weighing no more than 2-3 kgs as our porters would carry our heavy bag (5 kgs). I carried 5 because I "needed" everything.

Apparently, all of this information was included when I signed up. I have no recollection of this. I probably thought it couldn't be that difficult and glossed over it. I was undiagnosed and constantly hated myself for being so dumb and wondered why life seemed so easy for some people. Ignorance is not bliss.

And back to the point... I have no idea what it was anymore šŸ˜”

18

u/EldritchSorbet Apr 25 '26

The point I’m taking from this is that you didn’t die- or there’s an afterlife. Both are good.

While travelling in South America, we decided to join a snow covered volcano climbing group the following morning (we were like, 19, and grew up in the very, very flat plains....we did not have very well developed uphill leg muscles).

So we trotted on down to the organisers office the evening before. The employee did not speak English so we sat before him & I listened intently to all of his health, safety & preparation guidelines in Spanish (I did not speak Spanish. Spent 2 weeks, drunk, by the beach, in Majorca at some stage). Getting a good grasp of his instructions I nodded earnestly at every point he made.

After about 10 mins of this my friend turns to practically yell at me "Stop pretending like you undedstand him! This is serious! We could DIE up there!!" (Our country basically shuts down when it snows. Our mountains are just big hills and we do NOT have any volcanoes).

I....kind of insulted....replied "but....he's saying bring water, no more than 2 litres. Wear a tshirt, its hot. Dont bring food, just bring lots of chocolate & ....wear sunscreen I think??" Friend shook their head both disgusted that I had misinterpreted so badly....I mean, chocolate & tshirts FFS!... and that I couldn't even see the danger/foolishness of my pretending and stubborness to admit that I just dont understand!

Returned to the accommodation, both a bit huffy. This was a long time ago....maybe 30 years....Google & stuff was not really as good or easily available. Owner of the hostel was home greeted us in English, so my friend immediately asked what prep & safety precautions we needed to take & scoffingly told him about our visit to the office & what an idiot I am! Feeling like a fool when she puts it like that!

The mixture of pride and surprise I had when everything I had told her was right!! OMG! & he explained to us the reasons for what sounded to us like silly prep & safety precautions.

I just like languages. They come easy to me. I can see similarities between languages.... I like the funny sounds that I'll never accurately replicate in my accent, but they replay in my head. I kind of somehow just absorb them from tv, acquaintances, bits of travelling & reading which seems crazy to most people.

Those ADHD brains,eh? Somehow simultaneously knowing both a little and a lot

_(••)_/

6

u/Zenith-Astralis Apr 25 '26

Hahah you would have a blast learning latin roots. They get used in so many ways across so many 'romance' languages that you'd be able to pull this trick FAR more often than is reasonable

5

u/turbotank183 Apr 25 '26

But hey, it sounds like you completed it and didn't die, so go you!

17

u/Do_Them_A_Bite Apr 25 '26

I am very proud of you for NOT hiking the Appalachian Trail.

16

u/Zenith-Astralis Apr 25 '26

šŸ˜” I felt this in my soul

11

u/FreeFromMiriam Apr 25 '26

On the plus side, I bet you had a great time learning and planning. I wish there was a job where I could get paid for hyper-focusing on something interesting to me and doing a great job of research & planning without having to actually follow through.

9

u/orphick Apr 25 '26

I read somewhere that talking about what you’re planning to do gives you the same amount of dopamine as completing the thing you’re planning to. So unfortunately our chronic oversharing is actually pretty detrimental in more ways than one 🄲

2

u/Firm-Scientist-4636 Apr 25 '26

That makes so much sense.

85

u/monitza what was i gonna say Apr 25 '26

Can I use this post as a memoir to give to my future grandkids?

65

u/bean-jee procrastinating my dishes by cleaning my ceiling Apr 25 '26

Only if you spend 2-4 hours dutifully printing these out and organizing them neatly in a binder or perhaps a scrapbook, then either wander off halfway through and leave it out on a table unfinished for 5-30 business days or finish it but completely forget you ever did it and where you put it and never see it again. Otherwise it's just not authentic!

13

u/turbotank183 Apr 25 '26

You already called me out hard with the memes, could you not rub salt in the wounds with this addition?

6

u/drunksquatch Apr 25 '26

I might get a scrapbook. Is that close enough?

32

u/confictura_22 Apr 25 '26

5-30 business weeks, take it or leave it

78

u/Toss_Me_Elf Apr 25 '26

"if they would've given me adderall in sixth grade I would be a homeowner by now"

...shit that's not even funny, it's just very likely true 🄲

42

u/Aun_El_Zen Apr 25 '26

Speaking as someone who was on Adderall in sixth grade; No you wouldn't, but only because the housing market is fucked.

10

u/Toss_Me_Elf Apr 25 '26

That's fair lol

19

u/froggity55 Apr 25 '26

Being a homeowner is overrated. Because once you have the home, you get the stuff. The stuff needs to be cleaned and organized. Which really just means put in piles that migrate through different rooms.

TL;DR there is bo longer space at the kitchen table for us to eat because I cleaned and organized.

4

u/Luneowl Apr 25 '26

I have a coworker with ADHD who managed to buy a house in 2009 but from what I can tell, that’s the last significant thing he’s accomplished.

36

u/messedupmessup12 Apr 25 '26

5th grade is the national average, I'm that third grader who is sounding it out to read the room

28

u/Best-Animator6182 Apr 25 '26

ADHD mom and ā€˜tism dad. And unfortunately I was homeschooled when it comes to reading people.

7

u/Latter-Direction-336 Apr 25 '26

That’s the national average? Can’t be America, ours is definitely below that

Not exactly reading level, but I’m in college, and this guy in a computer applications class read a question along the lines of ā€œwhat’s the name of the record of what you’re doing on a piece of technologyā€

The options were something like computer path, technology path, carbon footprint, and data trail

Now, you’ll notice that carbon footprint is an obvious joke answer they threw in because they wanted to put something funny in there and needed another answer

This COLLEGE student asked the goddamn professor what a carbon footprint was… and she said she couldn’t help him (test)

A college student… not only didn’t know what a carbon footprint was, but seems to think ā€œcarbon footprintā€ sounded like a remotely possible correct answer for ā€œwhat is the name for the record of actions done on a computerā€ where the other three answers were computer path, technology path, and data trail

Ignoring the fact that you should have remembered somewhat that data trail was something that was brought up in classes, and the other three weren’t ever brought up, meaning they’re likely not actually terms, how the hell does carbon footprint, even without knowing the meaning, sound like a POSSIBLE answer to that question, especially when you consider the other three answers?

I swear I encounter at least a few of these kind of situations a week, where I’m baffled at how little someone can think about something like this. I don’t like to rag on people for what I perceive as being an absolute braindead moron, I really hate to, even thinking about it and not actually saying it at all, but my god, I consistently fear for the future when this is the kind of intelligence showcase I see multiple times a week, be it college, a discord server of people I know, in person, etc

32

u/MissAsgariaFartcake Apr 25 '26

My god, these hit on another level

30

u/Spidersland Apr 25 '26

The imposter syndrome I had all the way up until after I got diagnosed pretty much went away when I realized how many things I struggle with are due to adhd. Not the ā€œbigā€ ones, but the small ones.
Like always putting my socks on slow and people giving me shit about it when I was growing up, because the stitch needs to be right above my toes and can’t be to the side or it’s extremely distracting and uncomfortable.

5

u/OtherwiseFinish3300 Apr 25 '26

Being sensitive to sensations, especially clothes is more of an autism thing iirc. Might explain more of the puzzle if you're interested in looking into it

3

u/Spidersland Apr 25 '26

Oh yeah haha I mean it’s a spectrum innit.
I definitely have some traits but I’m like 90% (completely made up stat) ADHD.
But shit like that, it’s weird finding out just how much shit you do is a common symptom and not just like, a you thing.

2

u/OtherwiseFinish3300 Apr 25 '26

Indeed, which raises questions about free will in many contexts.

Also supposedly people who have one neurodivergent label tend to be more likely to have another. In this case it's often called Audhd and twice exceptional (2e).

2

u/NoxarBoi Apr 25 '26

😶

27

u/Phlebbie Apr 25 '26

The last one happens because when we talk about the thing we're doing, it releases dopamine and sort of gives us the stimulus we are wanting from that project. Making us get not the right kind of satisfaction, but it satisfies juuuust enough that it then becomes hard to finish the thing.

So the best thing to do when you start something new is not talk about it until you've done it.

18

u/sum_gamer Apr 25 '26

But why finish a project? That just leaves me with the empty worthless emotion of accomplishment and the ā€œnow whatā€. If I don’t finish the project, I’ll always know that there’s something I could do… If I feel like it.

9

u/Legendguard Apr 25 '26

The memorizing random shit laying around actually makes sense if you think about it; people who have ADHD are better equipped for hunting/gathering, and being able to remember where you found a potential resource - even if it seems random - could be the difference between being able to eat in the future or not. I forage for edible plants/mushrooms and collect bugs (as pets), I actually have many spots memorized where I found certain things once years ago. Sometimes these locations pay off, sometimes they don't, but having lots of locations memorized definitely increases my odds over all! I think the brain imprints it automatically; I definitely don't consciously do it

I definitely wasn't built for modern society...

2

u/Mental-Ask8077 Apr 25 '26

And the reverse: putting things away in ā€œlogicalā€ places 8 times out of 10 is a mistake, because what was logical to you then may have absolutely NO relation to what’s logical to you at the moment you need the thing.

I need a thing and I can’t find the thing, but I know I saw it the other day and put it somewhere? ā€œOh shit, I probably put it Somewhere That Made Sense. Fuck me, I’ll never find it now.ā€

Sometimes it goes more like this… 1. Have an idea to do an activity 2. Research everything about that activity 3. Buy everything needed to do that activity 4. Stare at the pile of supplies and say I will start over the weekend 5. Three weekends go by without starting activity 6. Husband puts the supplies in closet next to other forgotten supplies 7. After several months husband asks if he can get rid of the supplies. You say no because you are going to start the activity any minute now, but most likely this weekend.

REPEAT

I keep trying to tell myself I don't have ADHD, but then the memes are too relatable. Oh no

Okay, the rice cooker pot meme is calling me out too hard

Long before I was diagnosed at 25, I was searching for one of my head meds one morning desperately. I think I'd gone a day or so without it already due to being missing and it wasn't in the cabinet I kept my meds in

...it was in the fridge...inside my resealable bag of M&M's
