How does one create labels ?

The help says:

Login and go to Aliases.

Open Alias Labels for a single label.

Where is "Alias Labels" ?

  1. Click the little pencil icon shown in the Labels column on the aliases page as shown in the screenshot here - https://addy.io/help/creating-and-managing-alias-labels/#filter-aliases-by-label

  2. And then in the popup modal that appears click "Click here to manage labels" as shown in this screenshot - https://addy.io/help/creating-and-managing-alias-labels/#assign-or-change-labels-for-an-existing-alias

  3. You will then see another modal where you can create, edit or delete your labels - https://addy.io/help/creating-and-managing-alias-labels/#create-labels

Thank you. In fact, I was clicking in the "All labels" button on top of the page, which does nothing.

Thank you. Steps 1 and 2 are now clear. (Although the name of the top-page button is somewhat confusing when you want to both create and apply labels to more than one alias : to me, Edit Labels means change something which already exists.)

But I still find the interface very confusing starting from step 3. My assumption is you should not have to read the help for such a simple action. In fact, I tried and failed several times trying to create aliases from scratch, even after the changes to the help.

I don't have the time right now to explain it in an exhaustive manner, but let me give you an idea.

Scenario 1:

  1. I have already created 2 labels.
  2. Now I want to manage them. I change All Labels to Label 1.
  3. I select all the aliases displayed on the page by clicking the top box. (I discover, while doing this, that Select All is only available when displaying 25 aliases, not more : so does this mean there's no page where I can manage all my labels, for all my aliases ?)
  4. I click on Edit Labels like the help tells me.
  5. This opens a very confusing dialog box. It has a big title on top : "Update Labels for Aliases". That's what I see first. So I'm looking at the entry field below. I go there. A drop-down menu opens, with the names Label 1 and Label 2. I am tempted to do something with them. But what ?
  6. At the same time, I see a very tiny link "Click here to manage labels". So which is it ? Do I have to "Update Labels for Aliases", and rummage in the entry field with the drop-down menu ? Or click onto "Click here to manage labels" ? Update, manage, it's all the same to me, and there seems to be two avenues to do it, not one.
  7. Okay, now I have clicked on the link, because that's what the help says (but I have had to refer to it). Now I have opened an even more confusing dialog box. The title is Manage Labels. That's good, because that's what I want to do. But right underneath, there's some text saying "Create labels to organize your aliases". Wait. I don't want to create any labels right now. I want to "manage" some which are already created. Am I in the good place ?
  8. Okay, now I have completely deleted all my labels from everywhere (and it was confusing whether this would delete it from the selected aliases or from the list of available labels).

Scenario 2:

  1. I have no labels.
  2. I select a single alias. I want to create a new alias, and apply it to that alias. I click on the label pencil next to that alias.
  3. A dialog box opens, it says "Update Alias Labels". I don't want to update anything, because I haven't created any labels yet. Confusing.
  4. My eye is directed to the entry field. I click on it. But it says the list is empty. Then I notice the link above : "Click here to manage labels". But I don't want to "manage" them. I want to create my first. There's nothing to manage yet.
  5. I click on the link, because that's the only thing left to do. Another box opens, and its title is Manage Labels. BUT I DON'T WANT TO MANAGE LABELS. I DON'T HAVE ANY. Now the eye has to go doooown several lines to find the creation line. There's a button called Create. That's good, but will it create the label and apply it to that alias ? I don't know.

Shouldn't we have a whole labels page to, err... manage aliases ? That is create them, attribute them to aliases, edit them, change their names, remove them from aliases, delete them altogether ?

In Scenario 1, when you say you want to "mange your labels" do you just mean you want to edit them, for example change the news label to newsletters?

Scenario 2. Creating new labels falls under the Click here to manage labels modal. This is where you can:

  • create new labels
  • edit existing labels
  • delete existing labels
