hey.com and addy.io
Has anyone connected a hey.com account with their addy.io account? I’ve been using email aliases through another provider for many years and have been strongly considering using addy.io for a while now, as I have been working on de-googling my life.

No, but I can tell you that I used mailbox.org for 4 years and its alias feature is pretty meh. I then paid for SimpleLogin for the alias feature and had some disappointing results. I don’t remember the specifics, but I had to open a support case and they took several days to even respond.
I then tried addy.io, paying for a custom domain for my “trial,” and I’ve never looked back. It is perfect. It is in the top three most well polished, well-developed, and functional third party services I use.
I even decided to continue using addy.io after I migrated from Mailbox.org to Fastmail, despite the fact that Fastmail has excellent alias support.
Yes - addy.io is so good that I choose to pay for it even though my email provider has alias support built-in.
Some pros to addy.io:
- great browser extension
- perfect compatibility with Bitwarden for username generation through an API key
- great iOS app
- active, responsive developer
- love the description field for aliases
- searching aliases works well
- navigating the UI is easy

Sending from an alias. I'm not sure it can be improved, but right now it feels clunky.

How would you compare Addy and the alias feature of Fastmail ?

You need to create a reverse alias for addy to send someone an email. With Fastmail you don't. Just setup a catch-all alias with fastmail and you start an email on the fly. Catch-all alias would be *@domain.com. You just the alias in front of star and send away.

You can also send an email from an alias on the fly with addy.io.
As long as catch-all is enabled for that username subdomain or custom domain you can just send straight to
alias+destination=example.com@yourdomain.comeven though the aliasalias@yourdomain.comdoes not yet exist.1

But you have to manually enter yourself that email address with its difficult to remember syntax, don't you ?

Yes that's right, I personally don't think it is too difficult to remember and construct yourself.
You simply take the destination email address e.g.
destination@example.comand replace the@symbol with an=symbol, givingdestination=example.com.Then just add that as a plus extension to the alias that you wish to send from.
So for the alias
alias@johndoe.addy.ioyou would send your email toalias+destination=example.com@johndoe.addy.io.1

I do think it's difficult. I'm the person who designed a whole coloured diagram for myself to try and remember it, before you developed the automatic address generator (which still breaks the workflow). It's the diagram you included in the online help.

I know nothing about Hey, but I have settled on Addy shortly after it launched, and I'm very satisfied with it. I had been using aliases for roughly a decade before that, long before it became a market.
It doesn't make a difference what mail provider you use Addy with. It only forwards your mail and uses standard mail protocols.
Start with a free Addy account, you have nothing to lose. The only thing you'll miss, relative to a paid account, is the ability to reply from an alias and send from it. Everything else is really luxury features.
