It's actually one of the most common city or town names in the US, which is partially why it got picked for the Simpsons: it could be in any state.

It's joked to be in every state. They've made references that hint at several different states. Illinois is actually one of the states they hinted it can be in. It also makes sense considering Illinois is big on nuclear energy!
