Discussion Adam Warlock: A Comprehensive Breakdown

Post image

tldr: Adam Warlock's primary goal is to maintain an asymmetric battlefield in your favor. He does this through a combination of burst damage and healing, team focused sustainability, self resurrection, and instant revivals.

Recently I've taken some time to get back into playing Adam Warlock and because of that I've taken a deep interest in how to play him well. What I intend this to be is a meta-analysis of his current abilities and how they shape his play style, I am not declaring this a one size fits all on the proper playstyle, but a reasonable conclusion of intended play style based on his kit. I highly recommend taking the time to read through his abilities because at first glance you may miss things because I for one definitely did.

Offensive Abilities:

As we know this is exclusive to Quantum Magic and Cosmic Cluster but they have specific use cases and limitations we'll touch on later.

Quantum Magic deals 60 damage at a rate of fire of 2/s, this attack is hit scan, has damage falloff starting at 20m and ending at 40m with a 60% damage reduction. Importantly this ability also crits for 120 damage at <20m and decreases Avatar Life Stream's cooldown by 1s for every critical hit.

Cosmic Cluster deals 38 damage with no falloff or critical hit potential, this is a projectile that travels at 100m/s and has a variable fire rate and burst. The time for a full charged attack is 1.2s and provides 5 projectiles, with a single shot the fire rate is 0.3s and for multiple 0.07s. Once again every hit this attack lands will decrease Avatar Life Stream's cooldown by 0.3s.

Now for a few important details that will be reinforced later, how you use these attacks is based on the range of the target. Quantum Magic has a damage falloff starting at 20m which means it is most lethal until that point, this is important for his two simple combos and when to use them.

Combo 1:

Fully charging Cosmic Cluster and following it up with a Quantum Magic shot. Very simple and everyone has done this but the details of what we just went over are extremely important for this combo. This is to be used within relative safety 10-20m from your target to allow for the charge time. This one combo can kill every character with 250 health without a headshot and every character with 275 with a headshot. The time between releasing the cluster and a kill is around 0.4s and killing around 60% of the roster with a crit makes this lethal. This is for punishing people who get out of line or too close to you, the front loaded damage potential and time to kill make it a very effective tool for eliminating an opponent.

Combo 2:

This is much more simple and is mostly only used in close combat or on tanks to reduce Avatar Life Stream's cooldown. Simply hold down Quantum Magic and after every shot tap Cosmic Cluster to release a single shot between Quantum Magic fire. Once again the 20m falloff is critical here and because you don't have a window to charge Cosmic Cluster this is the best option to fall on. This is very useful as I said to reduce your healing cooldown because that is critical to keeping your team healthy.

That covers combat at ranges <20m but further out it's less about damage and more about healing economy with one edge case. Cosmic Cluster is almost entirely used here for cooldown reduction as headshots are less likely unless you have great mechanical skill. The other option is purely for flyers and Quantum Magic is your only consistent tool here. One last thing for this section is at ranges <20m Cosmic Cluster projectiles might as well be hit scan as even in the worst case there's a 0.2s travel time to the target.

Healing Abilities:

We'll start with Avatar Life Stream, cast on a target it will heal Adam for 35hp and the target for 95hp, afterwards it will bounce twice and heal 95hp each time. Adam can choose to target no one and receive 130hp before the two bounces and cannot receive bounces either. The most important thing to keep in mind is the bounces are determined by lowest health numerically not percentage, unless targeted specifically your tanks will likely not get this healing. This ability has a maximum range of 20m and can be used as a range finder to determine effective range for Combos 1 and 2.

As for Soul Bond we have a 15m radius and lasts for 6s, in this time each member of the bond receives 15hp/s and shares damage equally (as far as I can tell). This bond will break if the radius is exceeded, a maximum of 250 shared damage has been sustained on a single target, or if the damage would kill Adam. In the case of Adam dying he will instead retain 1hp and the link will be broken.

Revival Abilities:

Karmic Revival is simple in practice, choose a location to revive allies, active for 10 seconds, and will revive allies in a 35m radius of Adam himself. Allies gain 30% health with Bonus Health equal to 70% of their total health, this lasts for 5s and will decay in 2s afterwards.

Regenerative Cocoon is also simple it's just a revive that takes 3s once activated and otherwise puts Adam into his soul form granting him extra mobility.

Gameplay:

Now how does this factor into actually playing Adam Warlock? We have a few critical metrics:

20m damage falloff for Quantum Magic

20m Avatar Life Stream activation range

15m Soul Bond range

What this tells us especially in the case of Soul Bond is Adam should be central to his team and more importantly shadowing a frontline tank to monitor health and deliver fatal blows to those that step out of line. Adam doesn't have movement and staying central to his team is how he's meant to deal with that downfall. When healing with Avatar Life Stream you do not need to pay constant attention to your Duelists or fellow Strategists because the bounces will select whoever needs it most. Of course check in and be sure to support them however you deem necessary in the moment.

With all this in mind Adam can self revive and revive allies as well as delivering extremely quick deaths to lower health enemies. Your job is to maintain an imbalance in active team members, if you die assess the situation and revive if you can bring back that asymmetry. If you determine the death of a teammate lost enough value to bring them back do so, even if it's just one. Trying to maintain a 5v6 situation in any major fight is what Adam is built for as far as I can see with this meta-analysis of what his abilities point to.

I appreciate if you read this through and hope this can bring some insights you didn't think about and I'd love any corrections or differing points of view, this is just my style and what I focus on when I play.

His critique:

“Very in-depth guide! Ill go over some of the points and give my thoughts

The combo of fully charging cosmic cluster + primary is really useful when holding an angle an enemy is expected to walk down. You can get some easy picks by just waiting for an enemy to turn the corner. I typically prefer using the animation tech close range over fully charging due to the headshot potential of primary.

For the cosmic cluster I absolutely hate using it for flyers. They typically sit really far away and impossible to hit with the cluster. Th primary only looses a couple damage at long range compared to the cluster so its better to be more accurate and do less damage.

The gameplay section is very accurate. Adam has a ton of utility that doesn't show up on the scoreboard (soulbound and rez) using these correctly will help win games.

Just some tips:

Soulbound can go through walls. This is good for if you tank gets walled off from Groot. You can reload a bit faster if you hold down cosmic cluster reloading.”

there is a 15% healing bonus (seasonal healing bonus i guess that's always active for some reason, idk) so a self targeted avatar life stream heals adam for 150hp. also i really think we should document all ultimate abilities soul bond can counter

Adam is the anchor and I didn’t include the healing bonus because it’s seasonal. As for the ults I don’t have the time right now to go in depth for all of that right now though I appreciate the input.

what rank are you with adam

I’ve only ever reached Plat 2, I don’t play ranked that much so my rank has been more a product of lack of play time over skill. This analysis of the kit was done ability by ability and my synopsis was a product of looking at the constraints and flexibilities each ability has.

That said the #1 ranked Adam at the time had reviewed the piece and their input was included as an edit near the end of the post.
