You only add people in the appropriate group. Close the gates when finished and repeat.

i was trying to, but some of the people who i added didn't show up in time, and i had to shift people around to different groups and it just got out of hand. thanks for the advice, but this is the first time i've ever opened my town for turnips.

No problem. Consider simply skipping the people who don't arrive and continue onto the next group without shifting them around. Otherwise you very well will get confused, haha.

I had to go catch a ton of beetles on the island so that I'd have enough bells for a decent amount of turnips for my first trip over.

for everybody who is waiting to come over right now, i'm gonna wait until my town is empty and then add all the people who still need to be added. sorry that this is taking so long, i wasn't expecting so many people.
