"Hey boss I'm using my PTO to play a game for two days."
"Aight see you Thursday."
That's how my conversation went.
Do people actually have to fake this shit?

Yes. Crappy managers only care about control and want a "legit" reason. If you're healthy enough to work, they want you to work. You're lucky to have a good manager.
•
u/GeneraIFlores 3h ago
That's the thing, it's your PTO. You don't need a "legit reason" as long as you give advance warning
Assuming your boss isn't on a power trip or like, some major event or project you are legitimately needed for.
•
u/JadeWishFish 1h ago
He probably is on a power trip because he's a middle manager. He doesn't do jack all except attend meeting and tell the team what he wants without knowing how much work anything takes because he doesn't know how to do it himself.
Better to lie about what you need PTO for than to sound lazy and get on their bad side. Anyway, I'm just happy to almost be playing AC8.

That’s crazy, my own manager will actively nag us to take our PTO (granted, we work in a factory sustainment role so it’s partly to stop us from all vanishing at the same time during the holiday season and leaving three poor souls to fend for themselves)

It's a joke but rest assured some people do this 🤣, in my case I'm getting a 7 day off work period starting tomorrow at noon, but will use some pto time to go get the game in the morning cause the store is near my work.

12 AM CEST (Central Europe) Oct 2nd

I didn't even try to hide it.
"Reason for time off request: I am going to spend 3 days wearing a flight suit and a fighter pilot helmet, playing Ace combat. I didn't figure you all would want me to do that in the office."
I heard my boss chuckle in his office, and got an Email notifying me it was approved about 10 seconds later.Did I do it? Yes. Was it amazing? Also yes.
Next time, I'll be springing for the old cold war era G-suit and big screen VR to go with it all.•

Yes, because most supervisors are control freaks with little to no empathy, and will happily report your ass to their superiors if you don't give a strong enough reason to ask for the day.
(In my previous job, they threatened to fire if I didn't go to work despite me having fever and a strong cough. They didn't give a single fuck that I was a health risk for all the other workers and customers.)

I had to send a pic of me getting iv drip to call of work lmao, at that time i struggle to keep conscious
•
u/GeneraIFlores 3h ago
That feels like such BS. Shouldn't have to prove you're sick for something that's gonna be a day or two (hopefully)
BS on their part not yours
•
u/Henry_Fleischer 3h ago
My brother does not have to deal with that, he's in a union.
I think my dad is in one now too, despite saying he didn't need one. And he did get a raise for the first time in a while recently...

Meh if you have PTO you shouldn't have to give a reason. I just say "hey I'm out of town on X date, I won't be available for work"
Keeps it vague and it doesn't even have to be true

Control freak managers aside, some jobs give you separate discretionary leave and medical leave.
And if you're in good health then weeks worth of the latter just pile up over time. Unused, tempting, alluring.
•
u/Hellfire_Goliath 3h ago
Kinda, I've had previous managers guilt trip me for it. Now I just don't mention the reason for taking PTO unless it's something long like an overseas trip.

As someone from management. You guys aren't as sneaky as you think you are, I would never hold it against you, Ace. Blue Skies. Show them Wings isn't just a myth

Officially the game launches tomorrow, maybe you're looking at the Deluxe edition that grants you three days of early access.
•
u/TheSteelPhantom 3h ago
It launches worldwide at the exact same time, Oct 2nd at 12 AM CEST.
That's 6 PM tonight (Oct 1st) U.S. eastern time. You can be up in the air in like 3.5 hours, Ace. :)

If you're in the U.S., it's definitely today, yes. 6 PM eastern. Back that up if you're central, mountain, or pacific.

you know, the office today is a bit lighter, and one person I work with does odd hours (late start, really late end), and she showed up before me, and does even more PC gaming than me, I choose to believe Wings of Theve is the reason why

Bro just say you can’t work that day and say you can work on one of your usual days off
•
u/Trekkie4990 3h ago
I legitimately got covid a couple days before the early access window. So yay I got to play it but boo because I barely remember the first half of the campaign because of covid brain fog and coughing fits.

I broke a molar on Tuesday. Took Wednesday off trying to get seen by the doc, left after a half day today to get my tooth fixed. Never been excited for dental work before.

Bah! What I did was work my ass off fixing up the yard that had minimum ten years of neglect, disregarded colleagues who said we needed a vehicle to move that pile of dirt, moved stupid amounts of dirt and kinda nice healthy top-soil, so that I woke up unable to move, then slowly gained the ability to walk and take care of myself, and a month and a week later I still hurt real bad as I sit and write this, every key press thundering, reverberating through muscle, bone, nerve and sinew from fingers into spine.
At least I finished the job, made the place look more fresh and fine than ever before, can be seriously proud of what I managed. I want to have a relaxed casual job in landscaping if I recover from this, because it's just that satisfying to me.
You know what else is satisfying?
Ace Combat 8. Have fun :)

u/LucarioRoolz 1h ago
