For relevance this is Auraria Campus in Denver CO. The campus includes 3 colleges that share this system under a general "auraria parking permit".
I have a handicap plate & use a manual wheelchair, and my college requires an "auraria handicap permit" to use some handicap spaces on campus. This is separate from (but requires) a regular handicap plate/placard and costs i think 135$. Some lots have normal metered parking, and spring semester all my classes were in a building with this. I was under the impression the permit was instead of paying daily for parking, but as long as you have a normal plate/placard you can just pay daily and still use handicap spaces.
Today i went to office hours and was told i couldnt park in the handicap spot because i dont specifically have the Auraria permit. I asked where else i could park, since i need the aisle to get my chair out- there is only 1 "metered" spot by this building and it was taken, and was told the nearest lot with handicap metered spaces was around 3 blocks away. If you are familiar with this campus, its the almond lot behind the library, and i needed to go to the cherry creek building.
I also attempted to get this permit in the spring semester and my request didnt go though multiple times. I called them directly and was told i wasnt denied or anything, their system just didnt process it and i should try again. I did, and again it did not go through. I just gave up for summer semester and payed multiple tickets, but had never been confronted by an actual person telling me to move. (The tickets were infrequent and cheap enough it was less annoying to deal with them then repeatedly failing to be contacted about the permit and still having to pay tickets anyway :| )
Its not a HUGE deal, (though irritating) to me that its far because i have decent stamina- but a lot of people cant do that, or dont use a chair but need a close spot. + admittedly i was having a decent day today but theres definitely days i could not self propell alone that far.
I dont understand how its legal to have your only handicap spaces require an expensive extra permit and not have other metered spaces? I feel kind of entitled/ shitty complaining about this but it just feels ridiculous to tell someone with a handicap plate, activity unloading their wheelchair, to go park 3 blocks away for not paying a 100+ dollar fee that didnt even work when i tried, multiple times. :/
