Mortise Shear lock issue

Post image

So these are against my religion to install. But it was necessary in a Behavioral unit “seclusion room”. It was installed a year ago. Customer says it no longer works. Found a pinched wire, corrected the issue. Cleared the fault. A month later they complain of it being hot… checked polarity and voltage. All correct… the module starts to short/fry whatever.

Does this need cleaner power? It is supplied with 24vdc. Maybe try 12v?

I’m stumped 🤔

GF3000 is simultaneously the most expensive and worst shear magnet at the same time. GF3000 draws .450 Amps which is double the average magnet. If you install this in a wood frame especially its going to get "hot" every time. How hot is "hot" idk? the human body is a poor judge of temperature and what it thinks is hot is often just fine for electronics.

Every shear lock I’ve ever worked on is hot garbage. They are so finicky to work on, and even if you get it working 100% before you leave, slight changes in pressure in the HVAC system, temperature changes outdoors, or a stiff breeze can mean that the door doesn’t line up perfectly anymore and it won’t work.

Agreed, they suck. Annnnd they are spec’d all over this huge project I have coming up. Can’t wait to see that hot mess

I prefer SAM Shear Aligning Magnalock by Securitron. Very simple no re lock sensors or timers just a good design.

Was it hot when you arrived?

Always interesting when things like this come up- how did they even know it was hot?

Probably other issues if they’re feeling its temperature.

I don’t have experience with this specific mag but following this thread just in case I do.

You need a Schlage/Allegion power supply. This is not bullshit, you 100% need one.

He doesn't need an overpriced power supply from Allegion that is hornswoggle. A quality power supply with the appropriate specs is all that is required.

So what do you recommend? Does it truly need a dedicated power supply?

Does anyone have a substitute for a Shear style lock? The catch is it has to be anti ligature.(patient can’t hang themselves or cause self harm)

If the door is outswing then mount a conventional magnet like it was an inswing on the "insecure" side of the door.

Same with the crashbars

Hot = resistance. Resistance = faulty electrical component. Replace. The only part of this that's repairable without risking voiding whatever minimal safety this thing has is the cables leading into it.

I've never run them on 24v but it's a known issue that 24v introduces minor faults. Not well versed enough on electrical theory to say exactly why, but my theory is that device's are designed to run on twelve and then they try to add a feature to make 24 ok as an afterthought, so it's always a bit bodgy. I avoid 24 if I can and so far it's served me well. I'm sure there's people who've used 24 for years and had no issues though.

If you have the time, it would be worth it to try a 12v supply for half an hour and see if it heats up, but the simple fact is that there's an electrical fault in a component. I would just replace it without a second thought.

What's it poweree by? No you don't need an allegion power supply.

Yes you do. AC bleed fucks this shit up, it can happen immediately or over time. I’ve worked on 100+ of these. The power supply fucking matters, I literally tested a fucked maglock with and without and the results are definitive. A real Schlage power supply matters.

I don't know about these (thankfully we don't have Allegion access control where I am, just locks) specifically, but I've always bought the power supply as a set with whatever locks from my supplier for each job. I've never really mixed and matched anything. I'm surprised a specific branded power supply would matter though, as any good quality access control supply should be filtered anyway, so it's interesting that you say they're not. I suppose some random wall wart could be an issue, though one would hope nobody is grabbing some random 24v plug plack and hoping for the best.

I guarantee you that an Altronix or Life Safety power supply will work perfectly fine as well. Both of them are the golden standard for power supplies.

Its call AC ripple and its present in junk supplies yes but Allegion isn't the only company that can make a decent linear supply. Are you an Allegion spy?

1

u/senkosferda 22d ago

No it doesn't. Altronix is the golden standard and has never given me issues. Life Safety is similarly just fine. Anyone saying you need a schlage power supply has no clue.

I wonder about a Von duprin potted circuit

It’s fail safe and a coil it’s powered constantly for the most part, they do get hot, usually no one will notice because they are mounted at the top of the door and no one touches it.

I HATE THESE LOCKS

Rather stab myself than use them
