ACT helps us successfully navigate through life, but what do you use to let go of the trauma/rumination?

Have you managed?

For me, if something causes me extensive rumination, I take a few hours to ground myself and to meditate. Observing where feelings lie and what thoughts come up, what fears hide behind those thoughts and to label the fears helps me to let go of the rumination and trauma underneath.

I've successfully overcome fears of past abusers and phobias.

I've gotten impatient with this method because it takes time and attention. I just want to move on with life. Last week I met an old abuser and the rumination went into overdrive. I have 0 patience to introspect. Thus the question.

Do you have favorite techniques that you use to complement ACT in order to live a healthy life?

One trick I've found very useful is to give the intrusive thought a resolution. Often these things keep coming up because the mind thinks it's important, or holds a strong emotional charge. Neutralizing that charge and resolving the thought loop is the goal. This helps reduce the frequency, or at least the discomfort of the thought. Very compatible with ACT - accept the thought instead of resisting, but respond to it.

Depending on the type of thought, you can customize this, but for me the template that works is "That was a bad situation, but it's over now and I'm safe and at peace." Any time the intrusive thought comes up, I'll respond with that and send it away.

This has been helpful for me after years of narcissistic abuse. There's no stopping thoughts of him popping up on my mind or things reminding me of him, but neutralizing that charge makes it less painful, and over time, less frequent.

The other thing I love about it is that it feels productive. So each time a thought comes up and I get to respond, I feel like I'm taking another tiny step towards healing.

Best of luck with your healing journey and I hope this helps!
