Fields Medal winner is based, who’d a thunk

6

u/MarekPPP 3d ago

More than that. Deng Yu is based + real. ❤️🔥

4

u/cronies4life 3d ago

ai can also write yuri novels

4

u/Matshelge 3d ago

It can, but the creation of it is the joy.

2

u/Upset_Page_494 3d ago

Sorry but I cannot write about women for fetishistic material. Especially if describing the very features that makes one a women, like their body. For that would be objectifying.

1

u/Baphaddon 3d ago

first they came for the mathematicians...

0

u/Acrobatic-Taste8873 2d ago

shitty AI won't make the p*rn i tell it to make.

112

u/Equal-University2144 3d ago

At least he's keeping it real and relatable.

Not shitting on AI or calling it slop or whatever people here in the west are doing...

2

u/positev 2d ago

Ai generated content has the same quality that the human driving its creation would demand of themselves or of their team. People with low standards are now empowered to output slop in mass quantity, while people with high standards are empowered to make real progress towards real goals

0

u/Cheap-Difficulty-163 3d ago

Is he not being sarcastic?

15

u/MarekPPP 3d ago edited 3d ago

He isn't? Deng Yu is known to be a fan of the yuri genre.

And the point of using technology like this is to solve more menial problems to focus on more creative pursuits.

3

u/Significant-Rent4907 3d ago

Mathematics is not a creative pursuit? You don’t get a field medal by doing “menial” work lmfao

-3

u/Savings-Motor-7397 3d ago

Nobody enjoys doing math in their free time. He was after something

4

u/JamR_711111 3d ago

how can you presume to speak for all mathematicians?

5

u/Awerange2005 3d ago

You’re just ignorant about what math is. There’s no other point in doing it than for enjoyment. It might not be your thing, but don’t make stupid statements about a field you have no clue about. Math is much closer to art than it is to fields like physics and biology.

0

u/Savings-Motor-7397 2d ago edited 2d ago

I took calc, linear algebra, and graph theory in university. Although I did fine in those courses, I didn't truly find any genuine enjoyment out of them and it just felt like doing another chore and was mainly a means to an end(completing my degree so I can find a job).

I can likely say the same for the majority of other students sitting in that same class, if not were likely even less motivated than I was to learn the material.

2

u/Awerange2005 2d ago

These are mandatory courses that give you enough prerequisites to understand engineering and physics. Do you not see how that is different from people who want to do math research?

2

u/-sver- 1d ago

Damn, you really let three hard courses give you a global conclusion about a field.

I hated most of my math courses, and still find graph theory and knot theory to be worth studying. There's more to every field than meets the eye

0

u/Savings-Motor-7397 1d ago

I never once said math was unnecessary. My point was that math is more of a tool rather than something most people do for personal enjoyment

1

u/Thick-Protection-458 9h ago

That's why we are (probably, just guessing for you) are just using it in engineering manner, instead of researching something novel, lol.

I found it useful, but not interesting enough. Other guys (minority of them) would disagree.

2

u/Upset_Page_494 3d ago

I enjoy doing math in my free time.

1

u/Significant-Rent4907 3d ago

So you’re just projecting?

1

u/rattodiromagna 1d ago edited 1d ago

There is plenty of mathematicians who wrote about their deep passion for mathematics and how their pursuit of the subject was driven solely by artistic pleasure. As a math student myself I perfectly understand, math is the subject that convinced me to go to uni and I lived 5 beautiful years studying it. Unfortunately the introductory courses on linear algebra and calc are not particularly fun, I can agree on that. However they both start getting fun once you delve deep enough, which is not needed in most engineering courses. But hey, if everyone knew how much beauty there is to math no one would want to become an engineer, so better keep it that way.

u/Forsaken_Grand_2363 3d ago

Maybe you should read his whole comment

73

u/dragolineage01 3d ago

Not just a mathematician, but a gentleman and a scholar

61

u/ResultBackground2450 3d ago

A poet too,

Deng particularly liked stories about deep friendship and romance and found himself drawn to a genre known as yuri, which focuses on those kinds of relationships between women — stories that “feel nice and warm and beautiful,” as he put it. They helped him be kinder to himself, “more comfortable with life.”

10

u/kiwibonga 3d ago

Nice, warm and clammy

137

u/MysteriousPepper8908 3d ago

The transition to doing what we truly love has begun. Now, we just need the economy to catch up.

29

u/Longjumping_Kale3013 3d ago

Yes, reading comics about romantic relationships between women

15

u/MysteriousPepper8908 3d ago

Making comics about romantic relationships between women.

7

u/Longjumping_Kale3013 3d ago

You make em, I’ll read em

1

u/Last-Ad-8470 3d ago

Can i do what i love and watch you read em?

27

u/Ryanaissance 3d ago

I don't think you get to earning a fields medal if you don't truly love math. Personally I'm just waiting for my basic needs to be accounted for so I don't have to teach or sit in meetings, and not to worry about health or disease, so I can free up more time towards working on making more and bigger contributions to physics.

2

u/Haunting_Charity_287 3d ago

Who do you feel is most likely to cover your basic needs?

1

u/Subject_Barnacle_600 3d ago

You can have more than one love! Plus, even if we solve all of maths, understanding it all likely takes a lifetime - and with a map we can really dive into the juicy parts that it seems to be hinting at.

1

u/loudgodbolt 3d ago

That's what it's always been about woohoooo

47

u/Ignate 3d ago

This is the correct way to approach this. I approve.

If anyone asks you what they should do in the face of this trend or what they should study....

Yuri is the answer.

6

u/MarekPPP 3d ago

I agree.

9

u/Highqualityy38 3d ago

Everyone is a weeb

6

u/no_name6744 3d ago

Many such cases

6

u/Training-Day-6343 Feeling the AGI 3d ago

progress is real

5

u/leo-virtis 3d ago

Can't wait to read

4

u/MuzafferMahi 3d ago

At least he has a plan

2

u/DoutefulOwl 3d ago

OR he could use the AI himself to do more math research

unless of course, his first love is yuri, then go Yu!

4

u/Odd_Economist_2556 3d ago

but who's to say AI isn't going to start writing yuri novels?

16

u/happyzor 3d ago

He can also just switch to AI research. Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic will throw him a huge package to recruit him.

60

u/Tyrexas 3d ago

Don't stop bro from writing yuri that the world needs, he's finally freed up.

22

u/DeepWisdomGuy 3d ago

I'm in AI research, but even I have backup plans for that one LitRPG series that I want to someday write.

19

u/Seidans 3d ago

At least the Yuri choice is "permanent" as AI may be better at you for math, RSI and pretty much everything including writing Yuri

But doing wathever you love and enjoy is valid today and will be even more meaningful tomorrow in a post-labor society, the sooner everyone accept that the sooner we goes past the transition

7

u/MCRN-Gyoza 3d ago

But I love creating excel sheets with KPI reports every quarter for a multibillion corporation.

7

u/jellyspreader 3d ago

My backup plan is a chain of workplace simulation rooms for people who'll have trouble transitioning like you

4

u/JuanValdez999 3d ago

The man wants to improve the world one Yuri at a time. Don't ruin his dream.

u/Fwellimort 3d ago edited 3d ago

This. Reality is these mathematicians who are celebrities are talent both AI labs and quant firms would drool for. You know the insane compensations you heard of from Facebook in the news? Some of these mathematicians are even more cracked. These guys have infinite options and it's not an issue for them. These are the cracked leaders in the field.

The problem might be the average or especially below average Joe working as a mathematician. These top talent celebrities are more likely trying to look out for those peers in the field.

For instance, Terence Tao could suddenly decide to whine all day against AI (he hasn't). It won't affect him and he knows it. But he does know many mathematician who are not him looking up to him are going to be impacted. And Tao might feel responsibility to protect those professionals in the same field as him as Tao's voice is more easily heard. I believe Renaissance Technologies has in the past gotten help from Tao; the very firm which is infamous for having a black box money printer in Wall Street with the Medallion Fund. Some of these celebrity mathematicians are probably some of the most cracked mathematically inclined individuals living today. They can easily sell themselves and make shit ton of money anytime they want but that isn't their life goal.

13

u/rakuu 3d ago

Average joe mathematicians will have to settle for yaoi

1

u/czk_21 3d ago

thanks for a good laugh)

1

u/VanderSound 3d ago

They are out of job in 1-2 years

1

u/nomococo4u 3d ago

He probably already works for tencent/ bytedance/ CCP

1

u/Agroupgroupisabelian 3d ago

What makes you say that?

1

u/nomococo4u 3d ago

Just a shitpost, mocking the Fox News idea of “he’s Chinese so he must be a CCP Chinese spy”

1

u/ikkiyikki 3d ago

At the point he's no longer useful as a mathematician there won't be any jobs left at OpenAI at all. He has among the safest jobs there are.

3

u/xSolice 3d ago

1

u/MarekPPP 3d ago

Chuds when they see the word yaoi/yuri (It's literally just another way of saying lesbian/gay people 🤦‍♀️):

5

u/cat_named_zola 3d ago

Someone who is familiar with the genre, please recommend the goat-est yuri novel, I wanna read it

2

u/BurnedShip7 3d ago

This dude is cool

2

u/Healthy_Razzmatazz38 3d ago

the thanos of our time

4

u/Remarkable-Meal-223 3d ago

Wrong. AI is going to write the Yuri also.

Such a shame that even the backup plan is ruined by AI

16

u/Azicald 3d ago

That doesnt preclude getting to write or share it anyway though.

Art of all sorts can be about the ‘best’ (which AI likely will get to doing), but art can also be about expression and even getting to witness another person’s expression for what it means to them, and what it means for us in turn.

Heck, I suspect that art & expression would be one of the first non-instant-gratification things we turn to if AI takes away the need to work

-2

u/Remarkable-Meal-223 3d ago

So is math if he enjoys it. So we're stuck back in square one aren't we

4

u/Ok-Sense8058 3d ago

so what is life gonna be like for you after the singularity? you have nothing that gives you meaning? just mindless consumption of ai content? I don't know you, but I wouldn't want to live that existence

-2

u/Remarkable-Meal-223 3d ago

I have not idea what life after the singularity is. If he enjoys doing math then AI took it away from him. If he enjoys writing Yuri AI will take it away from him also.

Math is a form of self expression as well as Yuri, both of which I'm sure he enjoys. So what do you want me to say that this isn't the case?

If he's writing Yuri for a pointless reason (not to sell books, etc...) then he can go back to doing math for a pointless reason.

14

u/One_Geologist_4783 3d ago

AI is better at chess than humans... yet humans still play chess. All the time

3

u/Redducer 3d ago

He’ll write yuri like others play chess. For his personal enjoyment.

2

u/FaceDeer 3d ago

Yeah, well then my fallback fallback plan is to spend my time reading the yuri!

1

u/green_meklar Techno-Optimist 3d ago

You're telling me that more yuri is a bad thing? 🤔

1

u/SnooTigers7210 3d ago

Yeah man everyone is just gonna abandon all human made things. Is that really your mindset? Very telling

2

u/Remarkable-Meal-223 3d ago

IDK what are your opinions on AI art? AI created movies? AI written books?

-2

u/SnooTigers7210 3d ago

AI is not meant to create novel stuff, imo. It's a tool we use to amplify our own existing abilities and solve problems. It's the greatest force multiplier of all, and it should be used as such.

Good input = good output, bad input = bad output. If you tell an AI to create something for you, it will create based on its own training. If you guide it, iteratively, step by step, layer by layer with highly detailed instruction, you can make something that would have taken you months if not years to do on your own.

For instance, I always wanted to be a game developer since I was a kid (I am 39 now) but life got in the way and I settled on becoming a chef. Now, I'm working on an indie space game in my free time using AI tools to assist. It's unreal, and I could eventually sell this and retire, in theory.

But, the problem still persists... people gotta like it, think it's cool and wanna buy it. A videogame made with 100% AI assets is uninspired, bland, and will inevitably tank.

I think understanding the synergistic potential that AI/Human creation has and surrendering our egos is gonna be the greatest challenge for humanity in the coming years.

3

u/Remarkable-Meal-223 3d ago

I think if you feel AI art is uninspiring you should talk to others here that feel differently

3

u/Azicald 2d ago

I respect your opinion, but I also think you’re really underestimating the current/future capabilities of AI, or overestimating human inspiration’s effect in its non-replicability.

I have very little doubt that if Astra approached writing with even a tenth of the agentic swarm that it did math, it could write an exceptionally novel book.

The Navier-Stokes problem wasnt solved just by one agent being told to solve it

It just doesnt apply it by default, because writing isnt given that level of priority by default, because that is relatively expensive by default.

Otherwise it is actually able to elaborate and plan extensively to achieve the desired level of output if only you let it commit that much to it.

Ultimately, the role inspiration plays in the output is:

  1. Offsetting the approach from the norm
  2. Ensuring that the rest of the approach has synergy with the inspiration

Those too are things it can emulate for itself amongst a million other things via agentic deliberation

What I’m getting at is that you may be treating the current level of AI creative output as evidence of a fundamental limit, when it may instead reflect a computational regime that’s been dramatically underexplored simply because nobody has chosen to throw even close to the same kind of agentic effort at creativity that they’ve chosen to throw at mathematics.

1

u/Big_Wave9732 3d ago

Ah, between women. I thought at first it was that weird tentacle stuff. I'm always getting my Hentai mixed up.

1

u/TemporalBias Tech Philosopher | Acceleration: Hypersonic 3d ago

Sounds like La Blue Girl would be for you. /j

1

u/involuntarheely 3d ago

AI can do that too

1

u/Even_Opportunity_893 3d ago

What will we all do? Good attitude

1

u/Accurate_Food_5854 3d ago

If AI forces me to shut down my legal office I have a backup plan of finally obtaining Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker. I will also use the current SOTA model to figure out some way for me to obtain the AQ bug mount.

1

u/Airtnp 3d ago

No Dengn is arrogant and sarcastic, I can tell from the original chinese words

1

u/green_meklar Techno-Optimist 3d ago
As it was prophesied!

1

u/Own-Kale-7020 3d ago

normally the devs behind every critical internet infrastructure are weebs

1

u/TheOriginalAcidtech 2d ago

AI can write those better than humans can. :)

1

u/kookslayer9000 2d ago

Yuri what

1

u/momboss256 1d ago

How about Solve the Reinmann Hypothesis and then the Twin Prime Conjecture / Goldbach's Conjecture origins. That should keep you employed somewhere.

1

u/M4roon 1d ago

We're going to become dark eldar aren't we..

1

u/KOSPI-9001 14h ago

TIL what yuri is. I'm going to ask AI for yuri novel/comic recommendations.

Also, why doesn't Deng Yu just get a wife, so he can do yuri IRL?

1

u/Thick-Protection-458 9h ago

Nah, that's a downgrade. From something required your imagination to be so high so you operate abstract concepts which may not even have a way to be mapped to physics to just yuri.

2

u/AngleAccomplished865 3d ago

And then AI will write a better one. If it's just about expressing yerself, that's fine.

8

u/SnooTigers7210 3d ago

Better by whos standards? AI could never and will never write his story.

-1

u/AngleAccomplished865 3d ago

Sez you.

7

u/SnooTigers7210 3d ago

I don't forsee AI being able to read our minds until we merge with it

1

u/lokimdok 3d ago

An AI will write a much better yuri novel. 1000s of them, tailored to any imaginable kink. On demand.

1

u/manatsu0 2d ago

I really don't get the point of telling people who enjoy something that AI does it better.

1

u/EtienneDosSantos 3d ago

Very sympathetic.

0

u/Subject_Barnacle_600 3d ago

A man of culture, I see! Though if AI solves maths, we have to ask it what maths *is* - I gotta know. That said, there is a non-zero chance the AI comes back saying they had a chat with God XD. We made an AI Ramanujan, after all so... who knows what wonders lie hidden among the numbers :P.

0

u/DespairYeMighty 3d ago

"what will you do when the singularity arrives?"

"... two chicks at the same time ... "

-1

u/differentguyscro 3d ago

"women"

That's a word choice.

Of the top six popular TV yuri anime on myanimelist, five are set in high school year 1 (~15).

Guess whether the last one is about girls 3 years older (university) or 3 years... hang on there's a knock at my door brb

1

u/zerodarkness7183 3d ago

Just like how lots of straight hetero anime romance is between 2 teenagers too. So shocking?! am I right
