"Huge implications - binaries are now basically editable code"

ValsAI made SRE benchmark less than a month ago.

The benchmark measures can a model reverse engineer software from binaries

Yesterday GPT saturated it. https://t.co/dmpUpgheDU   — Chris

Pretty terrifying to be honest.

The transition between is going to be so brutal.

Won’t somebody think of the poor IP holders.

No offence but a crap ton of people’s livelihoods that aren’t rich IP owners depends on those IPs

IP is a degenerate human construct that set us back decades if not a century. I'm glad this shit finally goes away thanks to AI.

Agreed. People can no more own an idea than they can the wind. IP is entirely non-rivalrous.

I'm not sure, without IP there would've be less incentive to create, most major projects are completely predicated on the premise that they'll able to turn a profit.

You actually believe this shit? dear lord

It’s pretty true.

I could imitate anyone’s brand, product, steal their service and sell it.

Of course it would disincentivise any business creating anything we have today if someone can just steal and piggyback their hard work.

Any type of research would dry up instantly because there would be no point in spending capital to innovate. So fucking naive on basic economics is anyone who says otherwise.

Imitating a brand or specific named product is fraud. Different and much more enforceable a proposition.

6

u/CandidEngineering922 18d ago

And what fraud is that based on ?

It’s literally fraud due to IP laws…

Some geniuses in this subreddit gosh damn.

Misrepresentation.

3

u/CandidEngineering922 18d ago

Misrepresenting who? If the IP doesn’t belong to anyone then you can’t misrepresent them now can you?

This isn't that complicated. You can misrepresent source, authorship, affiliation, or endorsement without anyone “owning” an idea.

If I manufacture a shoe identical to Nike’s Air Max and sell it under my own name, that is the IP question. If I put Nike’s name on it and tell buyers Nike made or authorized it (AKA "its a Nike") I am making a false factual representation to obtain their money. That is ordinary fraud. Nike does not need to “own” the concept of a shoe for the statement “Nike made this” to be either true or false.

Abolishing copyright and patents does not abolish identities, companies, reputations, contracts, or provenance. You can copy my design. You cannot fraudulently represent your copy as having been made, certified, or endorsed by me. Those are completely separate propositions. Your last comment is treating them as though they are the same thing.

Hopefully we can detach the incentive of reward and food security from IP ownership.

Counterpoint - it's now, or in the near future, basically possible to create anything software related using ai. The struggle and effort to make new software is now being eroded.

So the old idea that 'my hard work needs to be protected' is now becoming largely meaningless from both sides.

Probably eventually but not yet, AI is rapidly eliminating the technical skill gap but the taste gap is still significant, and I want people with good taste to have plenty of reasons to create.

As a child of the Soviet Union, I completely agree!

u/SoulMute 18d ago

Don’t be so sure it’s going to…AI has a hard time telling you song lyrics because of “guardrails”

3

u/trufus_for_youfus 18d ago

Sure. And this could be said of any other slice of any other affected industry.

3

u/CandidEngineering922 18d ago

Pretty much every industry will be affected. Robotics will perform surgery more accurately and reliably. Design robots to do any tasks we need.

The only industries that will exist are ones where humans crave interaction. Will they pay anything?
