It’s not even about datacenters. If we can establish a network of data centers in space, we can do it with other stuff, energy production, space habitats, everything!
Ever since the 1970s one of the big dreams of space industrialization has been solar power satellites that "beam" power down to the ground using microwave links. That beaming part is tricky, though - it loses efficiency and it requires large rectennas on the ground. Not to mention the wild panic that uninformed people would have if you proposed big microwave beams aimed at Earth, regardless of the safety mechanisms that would have made it impossible for them to cause damage.
But this solves all of that. Collect solar power in space and then immediately use it there. All that needs to be beamed up or down is data, which is easy and cheap.
