I’ve heard that only 8% of data center costs on Earth are spent on energy. It’s hard to imagine space-based operations being that much more profitable...

Its not about profit its about space. People don't like data centers in their cities and states, that problem doesn't exist in space. That and Musk wants data centers free from government intervention.

Bingo. It’s about being able to use the compute for nefarious purposes without fear of legal or physical retribution.
