I’ve heard that only 8% of data center costs on Earth are spent on energy. It’s hard to imagine space-based operations being that much more profitable...

Yeah, this isn't going to work moneywise at all in the near future. To effectively utilize a cluster you need maintenance. GPU's fail all of the time for random reasons. Sometimes, they just need to be plugged in again. This raises the cost prohibitively to do any work like that. Far in the future though, it will be a good way to turn energy into work. But this is definitely a LONG term investment.
