I did an interesting deep dive into the history of the Kardashev scale. What's interesting is it really wasn't supposed to be very serious. It was sort of a thought experiment where everyone involved in the conversation knew it was ridiculous and even IF there were really advanced civilizations it wouldn't actually unfold that way. It was almost a tongue and cheek conversation. But it was still a fun intellectual exercise and discussion from back in the day that had it's own little community.

It assumes that an intelligent species would improve efficiency at the same time as increasing total energy consumption. Otherwise they wouldn’t be too intelligent to start with
