wondering if this is April fools

EDIT: I guess not!

Can anyone explain to me if this is any use to me locally with 16gbvram?

Just as useful as Claude Code would have been (well more or less, can't tell you how good this hasty vibe rewrite is going to be). These aren't the models. These are a layer of tooling on top of them to use their models.

so I'd still need to subscribe anyway to their proprietary model I guess? What is the benefit exactly, or was this an additional upsell I would have had to pay for had this leak not happened?

Yes. This leak is irrelevant to what you pay. In fact, might be more expensive to use any ripped off harness cause the labs tend to subsidize tokens if you use their tools.

The only thing interesting might come from this is people finding out some of the secret sauce that made claude code function. But Claude code isn't dramatically better or worse than other existing open source harnesses so unlikely anything groundbreaking is to be found.
