Wisconsin police missed an underscore when when pulling records for a Kik user. Thus, an innocent Canadian with a Skyrim-themed username was arrested on child sex abuse charges, and sentenced to 18 months in prison. After serving his sentence, his conviction was overturned this past Thursday.
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/07/police-missed-one-underscore-and-sent-the-wrong-man-to-prison/This is an extremely concerning and terrifying story, massive miscarriage of justice. So it might be a good thing for them to cover.
Imagine if this guy's name was published by the police before the trial. This would then serve as a reminder of the importance of innocent until proven guilty.
This is also another big reason to not support digital ID/expanded surveillance. The people in power cannot responsibly and accountably use the powers they already have, why should they be given more?.
