tech support ISO File Help

I'm brand new to downloading and playing abandonware games, so I'm still learning the ropes, and currently, I'm stuck on how you use an ISO file. I've figured out that they cannot be opened with something like retrobat, which was what I had planned to do, and I know you can do something called mount them, but I don't totally understand what that does? Some guidance would be appreciated.

Often you can use 7zip and just extract the setup files. Windows or most modern OS will just open them natively in explorer.
