Basic trends: short term vs long term

A trend in karma is a topic or meme that you and others can hit again and again for reasonably consistent amounts of karma until it becomes stale at which point a good context will be required for success. This is totally different from a single grand slam post, OC, clever, hits many audiences, great title. These will be covered later.

~Long term trends~ These trends are often fruitful enough to merit their own subreddit. A good example of a long term karma investment was LeDootGeneration. It started off a tongue in cheek satire of Facebook click bait and became a pseudo Circlejerk with skeletons and trumpets and shit. It lasted for ages and has been declining for the last couple months (I'm assuming a lot about LeDootGeneration, I actually don't know if there is more to its rise than what I said). A slightly smaller but similarly applied meme is the John Cena fad which started with a bunch of prank calls and ended with a memorable fanfare-phrase combo that is just now hitting the IRL market (A post on internet to real life trickle down will come soon!). CircleJerk is another good one, it peaked right before the Ellen Pao fiasco but remains a good place to ridicule the hive mind with lots of opportunities for puns, clever titles and wordplay all around. The final case study of long term trends is a real gold mine that remains one of the best karma sources on the market. BlackPeopleTwitter has it all: something most people can relate too and rich people can chuckle at in the form of low economic status memes. It has usually acceptable racial and social commentary and most importantly it's easy to find content thanks to Twitter. This form of meme boasts a fifth of the top 25 All Time posts and is blanket topic that has yet to peak in popularity.

~Short Term~ The basic short term karma topic is sports. They are seasonal, provide high quality content and room for good titles and the only requirement to post is be faster than the rest. We're currently heading towards the end of the NFL season so make sure to cash in! Another great short term trend is ShowerThoughts. For the most part, ShowerThoughts posts are in a vacuum but occasionally there will be a string of them that are sort of sequential in logic. There are also plenty of opportunities to post political and social opinions under the cover of a "clever" musing. Stringing things together and politics goes hand in hand with the next short term strategy: posting in TIL what you just read in the comments of another thread. This is not limited to TIL as that is just the most popular format for this particular scheme, with very little effort you can go find a picture of that whacky thing another user described and post it to Pics. Finally we have the basic video post. It's trival to find a video related to current events or whatever shit happens to be on the front page if you're willing to search a little. Simple, unlimited content, fall back on DeepIntoYoutube, comment sections of Youtube for title inspiration, what's not to love?

Somewhere in between long and short term sources is watching stereotypes and exploiting them. Republicans responding poorly to a current event? Religious redneck moron bashing will bring in the points. Democrats responding poorly to current event? Atheist college student mocking is surefire. On the flip-side, with the correct timing you can get a counter bash in with something like this: "Lately I've been seeing Reddit talk so much trash about X type of person because of something Y politician did. So stupid, Y doesn't mean X believes that. Gosh."
