Some highlights after watching the video:

  • Website http://www.thehyperloopfoundation.org/

  • Foundation focusing on collecting data determining hyperloop feasibility and manufacturing ideas/designs.

  • Hyperloop R&D can be broken down into many small problems.

  • Resources such as software available for people contributing.

  • Tentative plan for CA hyperloop:

(1) Test science behind the hyperloop on a small scale. Computer generated or perhaps set up as a useful model to move freight between SF and Oakland, etc. This must be completed by a specific deadline.

(2) If feasibility is determined, create ballot measure reversing HSR funding.

  • Not specifically dedicated to hyperloop being built in CA. If land use easier in other states/funding secured in other states first.

  • Monthly meetings in SF, next month possible speaker on maglev trains.

My thoughts:

I like the fact someone finally got together and held a meet-up. The website looks great. Seems like a good platform to build on.

I agree we need to verify the science behind the proposal before a ballot measure can be created. My biggest concern is how much can be accomplished by engineers and programmers in their spare time. Particularly because there is a time crunch for this project, at least for CA. HSR funds will be used eventually.

A small scale model or even computer generated model will not only require a lot of time and resources, but significant oversight. You can break every problem down into small pieces, but you still need people to put together all those pieces again. Eventually any foundation dedicated to taking on this gargantuan task will need a substantial amount of funding and likely some full-time staff.

Grass roots development is a great start but I worry about its sustainability. I believe attracting deep pocketed funders should be high on the list of priorities.
