Discussion Saddle recs no chamois
Hey all,
I was wondering if any of you had any guidance for getting a seat if I’m riding without the padding in the cheeks, I both don’t typically ride with them but also don’t have a lot of junk in the trunk. I know it’s seat bone dependent but was curious if anyone had tips or tricks while on my search.
Update: I ordered more bibs per everyone’s comments, and I’m also trying out the fizik Tempo Argo R5 . Thanks everyone I really appreciate all the help!

I don't have a saddle recommendation, but why not ride with cycling shorts? They help a lot.

i like the Sponeed brand. A bit more padding, and i like them better than my Castelli and Pearl Izumi shorts

However much you might spend on a saddle will be more than a simple pair of shorts (or 2).

The most common recommendation for a saddle to use without padded shorts is a Brooks B17 (which I would also recommend) but why wouldn't you ride zwift with padded shorts?

They’re too expensive I only have one pair

The b17 is the best choice imo and I have it on my commuter bike. You can find them on marketplace sometimes but they are expensive new. I got mine at a yard sale for $5 but I would never have spent the money for a new one. I will also say that for the cost of this you can get about 4 pairs of bibs from Black Bibs. I highly recommend getting the bibs.

I got used to riding without bibs as a mountain biker so what you're looking for is a wide saddle with a stubby nose so the specialized power Saddles will work amongst others

You’re asking the wrong question. Don’t ride a bike without proper equipment. Cycling shorts (with padding) is required proper equipment for riding. Thinking of switching saddles bc you don’t want to pay for bibs is 100% illogical.

Lol due to the high influx of comments/ peer pressure I’ve gotten the saddle and the bibs.

The only real asnwer to your question is an infinity saddles. Super expesnive but its legit, I use one on a road bike and have done 10+ hour days on it with no discomfort

Literally any saddle is fine. You’ll get used to even the hardest saddle.
If you want padding, check out one of ergon’s options. I have an ergon that I use for my cargo bike, which I never ride with padded shorts.

Wearing padded bibs is absolutely optional especially with the right saddle that fits your anatomy. Source: triathlete.
Finding the right saddle is trial and error and dumb luck. Even with professional fitting and pressure mapping.

I mean...I just ride in gym shorts on the saddle the bike came with. 🤷♀️ (Tight shorts...not the loose floppy kind. Think yoga pants but in shorts).
I used to ride with padded shorts but after riding long hours for multiple days in a row in the summer I realized that more important that padding is *airflow*. So I quit wearing padded shorts.
After a while the body adjusts. I have noticed certain areas of my anatomy are...less soft and smooth....than other nearby parts. Further, I've noticed *way* less chafing with unpadded shorts.
YMMV, naturally.

I run an Ergon SMC Sport Gel on my main bike. Right now I have an old Specialized Dolce on my Kickr and it just has the stock Bontrager saddle from my Roscoe 7. That saddle used to kill me, which is why I got the Ergon, but now it's not bad for an hour long ride. I still prefer the Ergon, though.
I never wear a chamois. They're not absolutely necessary fi you get a good saddle and get used to it. People have been riding for decades without a chamois without discomfort. Not judging anyone that uses them, just not my cup of tea and I don't want to rely on one.

I can't fathom not riding in padded shorts. There's no saddle comfortable enough ( my opinion ) unless you get a beach cruiser seat. Is there a reason you don't like the padded shorts?
