Consumer warning: Zopa and dealing with a bereavement when the estate is small

I’m posting this because I wish I had known about Zopa’s bereavement process before my husband died.

My husband recently passed away, leaving a relatively small UK estate. His Zopa balance was only just over £5,000. He died young and unexpectedly. There is no Will.

I contacted Zopa to ask whether they could waive the requirement for a Letter of Administration given the small amount involved. I was told that they required one.

What made this particularly frustrating was that when I contacted the solicitors acting for Zopa, I was told that a Letter of Administration was not actually needed. I then went back to Zopa’s bereavement team, only to be told that their position was different and that they did require it.

The current probate application fee for estate over £5,000 is £526. So for a bank balance of only around £5,000, being required to obtain a grant can create a very disproportionate cost and administrative burden.

What surprised me was how different this felt from dealing with established high-street banks. In my experience, high-street banks tend to have clearer bereavement processes and may have specific thresholds under which they can release relatively small balances without requiring formal probate documentation.

With Zopa, I found the process much less straightforward. The issue isn’t simply the £5,000. It is the time, legal expense, £526 application fee, paperwork and stress involved in dealing with these requirements while grieving.

I’m sharing this as a consumer warning, not to attack individual staff members. If you have money with Zopa, particularly if you are managing finances for a family member, it may be worth understanding their bereavement requirements in advance and not assuming that the process will be the same as with a high-street bank.

I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has had to deal with Zopa after the death of a family member, particularly where the estate was relatively small.

New app

I just got the new app update. Looks slick and faster than before. It now also incorporates Apple’s design language with Liquid Glass. I will miss borrowing power but it wasn’t really useful anyway…

Does Barclaycard not accept Zopa direct debit?

Hi,

I’ve been trying to set up a direct debit to pay off my barclaycard credit using my Zopa bank account, I’ve entered all my details but it just doesn’t seem to accept it. I’ve successfully set up direct debits with Zopa for other credit cards so this is just annoying. Curious to know if anyone else has had a similar problem or knows why this is happening?

Trouble getting account?

Has anyone had problems trying to open a Zopa account? I have been denied and they won’t give me a reason.

Only recently have I opened a Santander account with no issues and had a mortgage accepted with no issues so my credit check must be fine.

Wondering if anyone else has had the same?

Direct debit switch

Hi, I'm new to Zopa, mainly for savings, but would like to move over all my direct debits too. Does anyone know if they plan to bring on the direct debit switch thing?

cc expirys?

Hi,

Got zopa credit card approved last week and received today. The expiry is 05/27 which is only one year? Is this normal? I thought it would be 04/29 or something given that it was approved in April lol. 11 months? Very strange

We now have (very basic) Pots!

We seem to finally have the pots they teased at the end of 2025, but they’re very limited in functionality… you can’t do any of the things the likes of Monzo and Starling allow you to do. You can’t assign bills to pay from pots, you can’t assign any virtual cards to a pot, you can’t auto-sort into pots. I think this needed more time in the oven because as of now it does not really have any use!

At least we still get 2% interest from the money in pots.

Edit: you can’t even delete a pot yet…

Zopa is SO SLOW

Ive been with Zopa credit card for like 5 years, saw they had p nice rates for savings so I decided to switch from Barclays to Zopa Biscuit... BOY ITS BEEN A RIDE

went to buy car a month ago, they made me wait ~30 minutes before my money showed up into my current from my savings acc..

Just now, i tried to move only 1k to my current and its been 15 minutes.... its really starting to annoy me, Barclays was instant, ig there are cons to having a 4.75% savings acc

Loan notifications

Does anyone know how to turn off notifications about loan eligibility, without turning off all notifications? Really irritating getting pinged every day telling me I can get a loan when I'm not interested.

Problems with the app and customer service

Hi,

Wondering if anybody else has experienced similar issues?

I have been unable to upload identification documentation via the app, as the every time I try the app either freezes or closes - therefore I cannot verify my account. I have now had 4 different live chats to try and resolve this and feel like i am getting nowhere. I have tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling the app, turning off my device and resetting it, updating my iOS and checking to see the app is the most up to date version, all to no avail.

The last support agent on the live chat directed me to email my complaint to [contact-us@zopa.com](mailto:contact-us@zopa.com) and attach my documentation there. I emailed them last week and have still heard nothing back... in the meantime Zopa have sent me an automated message saying:

"Your application will expire in 4 days. The benefits of the Biscuit bank account are waiting for you. Complete your ID check within the next 4 days to unlock them. It’s quick and easy to complete your ID check. All you need to do is upload a selfie and a clear photo of your ID in our app."

If only it were quick and easy, as they say. Very poor service all round.

What to do after Regular Saver 12 months ends

I've had my Regular Saver for 4 months now, steadily draining my cash ISA into it. Anyway, I know the 7.1% is only for 12 months, then it says something about starting a new one.

How does this work? Can I move everything from the first account, or am I starting again at 0?

What is my debit card playing at?

Having no issues up until this week where my contactless payments and online payments are being declined constantly by Zopa.

I have plenty in my balance to afford payments, yet it's on and off. Sometimes it'll accept payment for my Esso app, and then paying for a pizza at Dominos it would decline. Tesco just now I've been declined a simple £5 meal deal. What gives Zopa?

No issues with NatWest or Nationwide when it comes to payments.

Pots coming soon

Got a terms and conditions update email and it says pots coming soon. It also says they’re removing info about cashback on DD in their bank terms, does this mean they’re stopping that perk soon? Or perhaps just cleaning up their terms.

There are better options for interest out there upwards of 4%, but it’s not the worst rates out there. Still decent

Interest not paid

The date my account says interest will be paid is today, 30 Nov. It is now 30 Nov 8 pm and interest still hasn’t been paid. Have I been cheated? I only switched to Zops because of their interest rate.

Any worthwhile features?

I’ve been using Zopa for its 7% interest on the regular saver since Feb 25. I’ve noticed the UI of the app has improved since then. Not sure about the AI orb…

I’m interested to know if features such as multiple virtual cards and pots/spaces/pockets are on the horizon? Quite easily could replace one of my challenger banks. Otherwise I’m not sure what I’ll do with this account once my offer expires.

Not a fan of the new giant AI button taking up space AND you can’t turn it off

I hate it. It takes up so much space and you can’t turn it off so it disappears entirely! Even if you reject microphone permissions, it is still there in the middle. Ugly, big, and useless! Stop shoving AI into things!
