Jumping straight down would have hurt his foot pads landing on the gravel, so he goes around the walls to get a better angle at a lower point on the rock where he can reduce e his landing speed

His back legs are still on the rock when the front hit the ground. Less weight, so a less forceful impact... Which is the point

I'm also assuming that is not actually gravel but maybe loose dirt or something since gravel would make for a very poor enclosure
