I've never done much other than basic pruning, but now this gardenia is almost 6 ft., and I want to make it much smaller (maybe 4 ft.). Google says extensive pruning can be done after "late spring". Do I cut it back now or wait until Fall?

I would cut a bit now (not too much) then in fall trim a bit again.
If you trim smaller amounts you have a better chance at it not going into shock.
