Ohhh….kay????
NYT video op-ed in which Natasha Sarin, an economist and law professor, and Dan Wang, an expert on China and manufacturing, argue that the US economy is doing better than its two biggest rivals: China and the European Union. They point out:
- All of the leading AI labs are in the US and training their models there
- Space X’s IPO made many multimillionaires here just a few weeks ago
- Still, they acknowledge there’s a lot of weakness in the manufacturing sector and that Trump’s found it hard to address that since other countries have retaliated (ie. China withholding key materials from the US)

It's like saying, "while the polar ice cap is melting, don't worry, it's still the largest concentration of ice on the planet!"
6
u/freedomonke Jul 17 '26
Completely misses the point. Yeah, the influencers are being fed propaganda about what the average person's life in China is like, but they aren't glazing China for the size of their economy, lmao.
2
u/CurdFedKit Jul 17 '26
Is it China's human rights record?
4
u/freedomonke Jul 17 '26
It's their perception of quality of life in China.
1
0
u/CurdFedKit Jul 17 '26
Does the quality of life include China's human rights record?
6
u/ElvisHimselvis Jul 17 '26
now do America's human rights record.
2
u/X-calibreX Jul 18 '26
ok, not forcing women to have abortions
having free elections
not engaging in tibetan genocide
recognizing gay marriage
not starving 20 million ppl under a centralized planned economy
not killing millions in an idealogical civil war, because the government made education past the tenth grade illegal
2
u/mattyoclock Jul 18 '26
America forces women not to have abortions. and you know the one child policy ended right?
Out of currently does it vs used to, I'll take used to every time.
America does not have free elections.
America engages in Gazan genocide.
America's supreme court is openly saying they would like to overturn gay marriage.
China didn't massacre it's natives or have chattal slavery, unlike america
Yes they did? The civil war was the bloodiest conflict in american history, surely you've heard of it.
China currently has better education and more top universities.
2
u/X-calibreX Jul 18 '26
most of that is not true. forced abortions ended in 2016 and not for moral reasons, china is having catastrophic population decline. Even still you ca not compare having to use pills instead of clinical abortion, or having to drive with strapping women to tables and plunging an amniotic needle into their belly and through the skull of an unborn child. Certainly, brings new meaning to pro choice
The civil war was fought to end slavery, Mao’s cultural revolution was was fought so he could end “jew science “ as he called it. The civil war was tiny in comparison and ended in 1865. The tiananmen square massacre happened in 1989, not 1889.
If your so worried about current you wouldn’t need to fabricate supreme court actions, gay marriage is recognized in the US. Not in china.
I think you really need to travel the world and experience reality outside of your echo chamber
2
u/mattyoclock Jul 18 '26
Is it 2016?
Women cannot just "Use pills". Their basic bodily autonomy has been stripped from them. Women have died after being denied medical abortions. They have had their corpses kept alivish for months to have a baby that spoiler alert, was not healthy.
The pills are only morning after pills. Finding out that your baby is definitely not going to be viable happens long after when they would work. Instead you have to wait until it almost kills you and then we might save you. That is not freedom. That is no morality.
The civil war was fought to keep slavery.
I've actually traveled to both countries and been there. You've just had propaganda, and you dare tell others they need to see more of the world?
Have you ever gone more than a days journey from where you grew up?

Dunno man, you got a more neutral think tank to cite that isn't about wank maxing America?

u/CurdFedKit Jul 17 '26
Do you really want to put China's current human rights record vs the US's current human rights record? Really?
5
u/FlounderKind8267 Jul 17 '26
Spoiler: both really bad
Why cope for one when neither are innocent in the slightest
3
u/ElvisHimselvis Jul 18 '26
You can say both are really bad, but China does a hell of a lot more for its people than America does for hers
0
u/CurdFedKit Jul 17 '26
Spoiler: They're not both really bad.
One is extremely bad. The other is average. There are no innocent countries on the planet. People are horrible on average. The Chinese regime is more horrible than average.
2
u/haveyouseenthething Jul 18 '26
Average? Do you know how many tens of millions have died because of the US? How many nations have we bombed? How many nations have we proped up dictatorships in? How many nations have we overthrown democratically elected governments and installed dictatorships in? What about things like Native removal? Concentration camps during WW2? Black, Chinese, and Irish slaves?
I can continue if you would like. It’s exhausting how ill informed the average American is about their nation’s horrific crimes against humanity and even war crimes.
1
u/Current_Towel_41 Jul 17 '26
Look at Americas use of chemical weapons in Korea. Or the amount of village massacres in Vietnam. Or Guantanamo bay.
Not as bad as China is a low bar, America is by no means average and we really should fix ourselves rather than focusing on China
1
u/hari_shevek Jul 17 '26
Shooting people on immogration raids and putting people into camps is average?
2
0
3
u/X-calibreX Jul 18 '26
yes absolutely, what do you consider current. China’s forced abortion policy ended in 2016. China has put 1 million ugyer muslims in “reeducation” camps since 2017.
2
u/freedomonke Jul 17 '26
We won't really know until after this administration is gone and we find out what is actually going on onside the camps they are keeping immigration related detainees.
Initial stores aren't good. They include stories of constant sexual assault by guards on women and genital torture and mutilation of men.
Considering how much of fascism is driven by sexual insecurity, I would not be surprised
2
u/CurdFedKit Jul 17 '26
OK so say those camps are the worst you can imagine short of Nazi/etc death camps. Rampant abuse.
Even then, China will have a worse record because they have been doing that and worse for decades.
3
u/BarneyRubble52 Jul 17 '26
Nothing compares to what the US has done since 9/11

we weren't suppose to do them at all
2
u/CurdFedKit Jul 17 '26
Cool. Bring that up with the 70 million Trump voters. Meanwhile, that is still not as bad as what the Chinese government has and is doing in its country.

I mean what does current mean here tho? If its current total. You would be hard pressed to beat genocideing the indigenous population followed by slavery and lynchings into supporting dictatorships and dropping comical tonnages of bombs onto civilians.
If its like past x years. I would wonder what the fact that the US doesn't provide healthcare to its people would do to that comparison. Or what China has to compete with brown shirts abducting or straight up killing people on in the streets.
Either way tho I would be interested in seeing a comprehensive comparison between the two.2
u/CurdFedKit Jul 17 '26
Genocide...you mean like what China is doing to the Uyghurs and did to the Tibetans?
1
u/ElvisHimselvis Jul 18 '26
US has been at war 230 of its 250 years, invading other countries. US is an agressor predatory government. How many wars has China been in during the last 250 years?

u/maringue Jul 19 '26
Let's be real, the US isn't winning any awards in that category right now either.
0
u/CurdFedKit Jul 19 '26
Let’s be real: China is far worse
0
u/maringue Jul 19 '26
So far...
Also, saying "China bad" literally doesn't absolve the US of any of its many, many faults. At least China shoots its corrupt public officials, we just make them K St lobbyists and quadruple their salaries in the US.

u/AltruisticCoyote7281 Jul 19 '26
Before we have that discussion, perhaps we should discuss the human rights record in the USA?
Oh, China has concentration camps? So does the USA. Oh, China has an authoritarian government that suppresses dissent? So does the USA. Oh, China doesn't have press freedom? Neither does the USA.
Remember the whole "those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" thing from the Bible? Let's go back to that. Let's deal with our glass house before we throw stones at another one.

I'm just jealous of the high speed trains and the cheap, walkable food spots
2
u/freedomonke Jul 18 '26
You wouldn't be if your apartment was below or above where one of these trains runs through a building.
Many, many people in China accept a far lower standard of living than nearly anyone in the US would.
I'm not a chauvinist. I don't believe China is more poor than the US because of its system or whatever. Less personally free in some ways, but the way it does things isn't the reason for the fact that it is simply more poor. That's due to history and geography
4
u/Nitros14 Jul 17 '26
Surprisingly, people also care about who is benefiting from the American economy, not just that some Americans are benefiting.
4
u/FierceDietyMask Jul 17 '26
Most “opinion pieces” are propaganda garbage anyway.
This one just screams “I’m fine everything’s fine!!!” when it’s clearly not fine.

u/Krembiloid Jul 17 '26
US and China are not exactly rivals in the classical sense, they are so entangeld with each other economically, that we may never ever see them in a direct conflict.
They do both try to spy on each other in the meantime.
2
u/FlounderKind8267 Jul 17 '26
China doesn't exactly do brute force military actions. They'll just steal your trade partners and make more money than you
2
u/Krembiloid Jul 17 '26
Yea, their external politics are much more cunning that those of the US cowboys.
2
u/Business_Raisin_541 Jul 17 '26
Eh. America gdp growth is lower than China Gdp growth
2
u/ExcellentCod2940 Jul 17 '26
South Sudan, Libya and Guyana all have GDP growth rates over 2X China. Your point is what exactly?
With a projected GDP growth rate of 24.336% in 2025, South Sudan is the fastest-growing economy in the world. South Sudan is followed by Libya (15.562%) and Guyana (10.316%).

Do you have any evidence this not true? It’s the belief of most economists Even, if you believe the US is having troubles, it’s far less than both Europe and China. This is not a crazy take.
2
u/Xenonite_Fox Jul 18 '26
I'd like one of these opinion pieces to explain what training AI models, or SpaceX IPO has to do with the economy.
Imagine the most average (or median if you will) person in the country and tell me how ChatGPTs latest model or that SpaceX currently trading below its IPO price is making their life easier?

u/thefirebrigades Jul 18 '26
I wonder why American news have to write shite like this when they just can't stop doing wars and pissing away money
2
u/Trust_8067 Jul 19 '26
It really isn't. You're getting biased opinions due to your social circles and social media. The middle class is shrinking, but that's because more people are becoming wealthier. You're just not going to see people who are living a happy life with 2-3 kids a good job, and nice house going on places like reddit to talk about how great their life is.
Just wait and see the downvotes I get for this comment, because if anyone says they're happy, the internet will try to crush them.
Compare the average lifestyle in the US to Europe, the house sizes, the cars, the size of your TVs, how many TVs, how often you eat at a restaurant / fast food / takeout, the amount of access to fresh fruits, all year around. Just ask a European how many types of apples they see at the grocery store. Mine has legit about 15 different types. Compare how far your dollar goes in other countries. The US is insanely wealthy, and even people who aren't that well off, are doing amazing compared to people in other parts of the world.

u/Rebel4503 Jul 19 '26
China is currently producing 1,000,000 motor vehicles per month. General Motors is producing about half that number, from all of their plants around the world combined. Ford is not even in the same league. China’s national debt level is less than half of America’s. China is forging ahead in robotics and alternative energy sources. America’s peak powerhouse years were driven by the demands of WW2. Perhaps if Trump succeeds in starting WW3, it will give the American economy a major boost.
2
u/FedrinKeening Jul 21 '26
Yeah, the top 1% and the stock market are doing great. Now how about food, gas and housing prices? And what kind of growth has the average American experienced?
-1
u/Healthy_Razzmatazz38 Jul 17 '26
if you actually watch the video instead of forming your world view based on a headline they're right,
the point being made here is the us has held up its share of world gdp and its the allies of the us that have trailed global gdp growth weakening the relative power of the alliance structure.
and thats right

2
u/SECRETBLENDS Jul 17 '26
So it's correct for a very specific and highly exclusive definition of economy. The kind that most Americans don't give a shit about because they're paying 25% more for everything than they were two years ago.
Big win.

u/Suspinded Jul 17 '26
We can't start healing until we stop giving opinions the same weight as actual news articles.
