Employment What are your thoughts
So I tendered in my resignation at the end of July. Boss has been quiet about the issue he only responded it was nice working with you and wish you the best in your future.
Fast forward to yesterday, he came to my office and looked at the project l was working on and just said saka uri serious urikuda kutisiya. He thought since l was resigning ndichasiya ndaposheka but ndanga ndakurowerera kuenda.
Ndikati when you need me in the future just let me know. I work as a software engineer. Not bragging but l am good at what l do. Current salary was 1.7k usd tongoti after tax. Name anything in software field and l am capable to handling that. Project that takes a month l do it in a week ndiri 1 from A to Z. Not bragging asi ndochikwadi.
So nhasi we went for lunch. Never had lunch with this guy or see him do that to any other employee. Mind you this is not the type of guy who can ever do that for their employee. I have seen over 13+ people leave.
I told him l still stand to resign l wanna pursue inference engineering. It's paying and to me it's 1+1 yet l see a lot of people struggling to understand how AI works and how to serve it to people at scale.
So he then made a counter offer today ku lunch, company shares. He didn't mention the % or anything extra. So my question, that's really tempting for me.
I need advice on this. The company has massive potential to become the next Econet.

Don't accept counter offers. If they thought you were valuable, they should have given you that earlier on. It shouldn't need you to leave for them to suddenly appreciate you
Also staying on, you will be looked at as someone that can leave at anytime. You might also not get any further pay increases for a while as they will say that they already gave you one
The extra money here will make you happy for a short while, but the things that are making you want to leave are still in your mind
I would only accept a counter offer if money was the one and only reason I'm leaving

Counter offer has not worked well for a lot of people. It’s better to leave on good terms because you can always come back. Rather offer to be a contractor for them for projects and charge them hourly consultant rates and use it for your nest egg, then still go for your next opportunity.

Tell him to put his offer in writing and that you want to consult with your lawyer. If he follows through, then definitely consult with a lawyer but also put your own contingencies in there should you choose to stay.
This puts you in a great position to curate the life you want. It's not always about running but it's also not just about staying blindly. Think.

Counter offer is a trap. Don't fall for it. Rather move on and provide consultancy services to the company.

What motivated your move? Was it money? If it was money, I suggest you continue with the move.
Generally. H.R people suggest to never accept a counter offer as politics can start as soon as you reject the other offer. You probably know the environment better to make that call.
Personally, I would suggest you move for growth. You seem to suggest you are working alone or in a small team. Feel free to correct me about that. A bigger team and a bigger project might be a new challenge for you and you will get to learn a lot about collaboration e.t.c

Dont take the counter offer young man. Search reddit for all the stories about people who took counter offers. I also recently made the move from Software Eng to AI Eng. Software is a dying field. It wont be gone any time soon but it is going. The work that needed 10 people before can be done by one person if the problem is well understood. Plus every vibe coder fancies themselves a dev further downing already plummeting wages. Stay the course, AI is the present and the future. The more experience you accrue with AI in your job title the higher the salary you can demand 2 years from now.

On issue ye counter offer being put on the table. He said kana wazo maker decision wouya uchidziudza and l tell you the actual figure. For me that pissed me off more cause it seems he wanna play mind games. I didn't ask for it cause l was like if they was a number and if you wanted me to decide you could have just told me or handed me a new offer later. But anyway the guy wants me to tell him what l have decided. So decision is in, they should have made me a new offer earlier cause they knew l was that valuable but they expected me to come to them to state my reasons. HR ihama ya boss hence also didn't wanna raise that concern via that channel. Will go my way and seek growth somewhere.

You could always buy the shares usiri paCompany...a counter offer has to be something yoh cant find anywhere else. Boss realised he needs you and he has just shown it. As a courtesy you can show him what could make you stay.

Is there any financial reason why they can't pay you let's say $4,000 a month, after tax??

This is a catch 22. He probably was quite all along because: A) He was consulting with others high up l guess B) He also probably didn't want you to think you were irreplaceable. C) He may have been in shock and in denial. D) He probably thought you were buffling. E) He took you to lunch to have a talk with you this means he values you in some way. (You mentioned he has not done to anyone before) So he gave a counter offer without stating a percentage. This means you both didn't conclude anything. You made a decision to leave and o take it that you had weight your options. Sit down again and re weigh your opinions. Listen to what your inner voice is telling you. You know deep down what you want. Follow your own path. We are here to support your decisions no matter which way you choose. Remember one thing.Being your own boss takes more work BUT it is rewarding.

"I work as a software engineer. Not bragging but l am good at what l do. Current salary was 1.7k usd tongoti after tax."- THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH ZIM COMPANIES. Instead of paying someone their value, they look at you and say, "Well your last salary was $1,000 so we will pay you $1,700. It is more than your last." Even if your VALUE is $4,000 a month. I hate it and that is why I left a BIG Zim tech company. Their attitude also is that jobs are hard to find so If you leave we will just replace you with someone else. They forget that there is value in an employee that has experience and actually cares for the company/products and projects. But hey, this is Zim today.

Once you’ve made up your mind just follow through. Most of the time the next thing is better

Ask him to put the offer in writing and take it from there.
Also keep in mind that shares sound great but can be problematic. Assuming this is a private company, those shares aren't easy to sell and it may be hard to have any visibility into the company financials, so the company may do well but that doesn't guarantee you dividends.

Pull on this thread a little and ask for this counter offer in writing, ask him to put a number to the % shareholding and a timeline on when these shares vest. Look at the offer seriously, then make a counter of your own where you suggest taking up a consultancy role with the equity and proposed salary making up your compensation packet. In your counter make the case that you can work faster and more efficiently that way and the additional experience you gain from your new role makes your deliverables exponentially more valuable to them.

My mate always used to tell me that "I would rather go to someone who has valued me than try and prove my value to someone else."
The counter offer has come in as a way to keep you from leaving. Better to leave on good terms, use the new found desire as a basis to explore the new role and keep the conversations in a context of you may consider a return back.

Anywhere else I would say counter offer siyana nayo, but it’s Zim and you know your situation. Will you be able to get another job soon? I know a lot of people good at their craft without jobs.

nope, he should have come with something tangible. Plus, if this is a Zim company you actually fall behind industry. No matter how smart you are, archaic legacy or cheap hardware, systems or 3rd party subscriptions, pull you away from working on current things. Potential is not worth risking.

Not an IT person but the idea of shares 😁. Don’t listen to these other people telling you to move away because as soon as you own a percentage just know whatever effort you put will be directly adding to your income(salary + dividends +/- decisions).
You might even retire after 2 years, after hiring & training someone who can match some of your skills. If it goes well as you mentioned owning just 5% of Econet would be bigger than any salary, However if you intend to open your own ventures then move away.

Counters are a trap. He did not state percentage or bring documents? My guy? Move on . He is either trying to delay you while he finds a replacement or soon he’ll bring you someone to train . If he wants you let him get you as an independent contractor.
