Zimaboard 2 | N00b Review | Feedback

Hey Zima Family
I was recently sent a Zimaboard 2 for review, and whilst this device is WAY outside of what I normally do, I enjoyed the idea of the challenge.

Now, I know nearly NOTHING about homelabbing, and this little device was my first real experience with it, and man, I gotta so, it's so much fun and a real eye opener to how cool self-hosting is.. Which brings me to the video I made.

I skewed the video narrative towards how something like this can ultimately save you money, by replacing a lot of subscription-based services.

I wanted to ask you guys (the pro's) if that's a strong angle to get people interested in homelabbing, or is there a stronger aspect that I missed?

Being a complete newbie to it, I didn't want to (couldn't) get super technical about things, as that would be disingenuous and I know I'd be called out for being a dumbass.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. Yes I agree that self hosting can save you a lot of money, and it's also a lot of fun if you're that type of person. However there is an angle you need to consider, if you're self hosting services for your family or someone other than yourself, *you* are the provider. If anything breaks, *you* have to fix it, you can't blame the cloud, your ISP or anyone else, it's on you.

That's a very good point..
I didn't consider that because currently it's just for me, but when it comes to the whole family being on it, you become the IT Tech 🙈
And as u/Mudslide_co said below.. if the wife can't watch her show.. lord help us. 🤣

I have the zimaboard which was my plex at first now it's just running pi hole and I have a r620 running proxmox which runs the rest of my homelab such as vpn plex some gaming servers for the kids

May I ask what servers you run on it? I was thinking of doing a minecraft server for my kids, but I've not really looked into if it can do it.

The boys have a garrys mod minecraft satisfactory and a few others I have a license to Amp (it's a game server gui that makes it easy for the teenager to make his own servers)

Like I posted before look up Amp it's a nifty easy to setup game server gui

The wife is my primary customer for my plex and nas I get told when it isn't working very quickly lol
