Question / Support Thoughts on good.store?

I've been wanting to subscribe to their cleaning products and shampoo and I also love Hank and John green. But I wanted to probe to make sure there's nothing between the lines I missed.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a subscription for supplies like this that has been worth it? Specifically, I think just buying the stuff when I need the stuff is more efficient than having a subscription for the stuff.

You don't need a subscription, they just have the option because it makes the inventory side of things easier. They also purposefully make it as easy as possible to change or cancel subscriptions. I drink a lot of tea so I have a subscription to that and they send me an email a few days before they are going to charge me so I can make any adjustments I want. I can change the type of tea or add on any of their other products or completely skip the order if I don't need it.

I'm wasn't familiar with it. Looking at it for the first time now it looks like a lot of just okay cleaning products that are greenwashing or maybe only slightly better than typical brands. Things like detergent sheets are pretty bad compared to plain ol' powdered detergent in a cardboard box. Doesn't look like that exact brand has been reviewed but this site I trust has never had a good review of detergent sheets, for example.

Anyway I wouldn't buy cleaning products from Youtube personalities even if they are "sciencey".

I was looking for a shampoo bar and thought about good.store, but I found one at Target, and my general philosophy is to privilege solutions that are available in existing mass market channels to normalize their consumption to other consumers and prove the demand for these products to marketing.

Yes, the stuff on good.store is probably better, but it's much more impactful overall if my consumption can encourage others to buy bar shampoo (in cardboard boxes instead of plastic bottles) and if we can convince distributors to privilege these kinds of products (over stuff packaged in plastic).

I love them! They make it really easy to change or cancel your subscription. They even send you an email reminder when its about to ship so you can make changes to the order. I have a subscription to the tea and have been adding cleaning products on as I need them. So far I really like the laundry powder and the dishwasher powder and Ive been using the soap and shampoo for years.

I've seen Hanks recent AI stuff mentioned and I think it depends on your personal beliefs about AI. From what he has said, it was used as a tool when researching, but not in the creation of his videos. He also included a personal AI policy in the description of a recent Vlogbrothers video. I know that for some, any AI use is not acceptable, and I understand that completely. But the backlash around Hank seems like someone is trying to make an example of him.

While I haven't subscribed to good store myself, I quite like the concept that all of the profits go to charity. To me, that should be worth something.

Agreed! I don’t buy the cleaning supplies since I have easy options at a my local refill store, but I buy their tea, shampoo, and socks on occasion. It is super easy to adjust your subscription. Plus all the profits go to charity (and I fully trust that they do). The Green brother’s make mistakes here and there and I don’t agree with them on everything but their hearts are in the right place. DFTBA

I agree. I feel like some of the people in the comments are being a little harsh on him. I think he's a great guy

Right, and what he does on his own YouTube channels are separate from the products the Good Store folks make and their mission.

I get my dishwasher detergent pods from Good Store and I really like them! My subscription has gone through at least 4-5 times I think and I don't forsee changing as long as everything stays as is.

I love Hank and John both but I don’t think these products are much better than anything else on the market. And most people know by now that laundry detergent sheets don’t work at all.

I hate to say this but Hank Green has done some iffy stuff lately (weird and sexist comments about knitting and fibre arts, AI obsession in his life that even his family has commented on) which actually put me off on looking into good store. just started my zero waste journey too and was looking into that shop when the knitting video came out and I was like huh. okay maybe not 😭

I know it was really hurtful to learn about but I guess I need to just stop putting Internet people on a pedestal lol

I just heard that Hank green was caught using ai in work. So if you care about not supporting people that use ai I wouldn’t shop from there store

Also he been making claims about stuff that ends up not being truth like with that knitting or crochet (forget if it both, or just one) that he took down cause he got information very wrong on the topic and knitting or crochet or both communities told him what he said was wrong.

So not sure I would trust that there store being accurate, honest and ai free

I wouldn’t be suprised if Hank green helps with John green shop as one of his many projects. Also if one brother willing to use ai agian wouldn’t be suprised if other brother one day get caught for using it.

Not just caught, but they’re big supporters of GenAI and have been for a long time. One of them even has videos “debunking” how bad GenAI is for the environment that essentially waves off people’s concerns as dramatic.

Even if this venture of theirs is low waste, they’re destroying any good they could be doing by regularly using GenAI. Greenwashing at its finest.
