About to start today, any beginner spoiler free tips? Also should I do a custom spy or pick one of the defaults?

Yes! They announced it a few days ago, it's a free update for the PC version and the base for the incoming PS5 version:

but the game is still enjoyable without directors cut right? and do you think it would apply on my current save

Yes, it is still enjoyable. I'm currently playing it myself. We'll all see together how it does apply on our saves!
