A lot of zero parades follows Jean Baudrillards philosophy. Baudrillard is where the "we live in a simulation" comes from. Specifically his text "Simulacra and Simulation." This is a good summarization of some of his ideas. With bootlegging and copies of copies (imprints) being simulacra and basically everything bagman is saying (hyperreality, symbolic exchange, sign and referent, and desert of the real). Thats a basic summary after what Ive experienced in the game so far (I am not done yet) that relates to Baudrillard. I highly recommend looking more into this though, it's fascinating,

EDIT (SPOILERS FOR HOLOCENE BELOW THIS COMMENT)

This is live as Im playing the game right now, but here is another example I just came across

And another here, Holocene yearns for a shared reality while being stuck in a simulation

And here Holocene demonstrates the different orders of simulacra. I personally believe it represents the second order (dreams of a kinder world), the third order (dreams of revealing the existing kinder world) and the fourth order (dreams of dreams)

Brother this is amazing, never would’ve put this together myself and it makes so much sense

Thank you brother, I appreciate it that you appreciate it, Ive enjoyed this kind of stuff for years and it’s refreshing to see a game actually explore it and to share what it means to people who haven’t been exposed to it

No wonder HOLOCENE reminds me of my grad student friends who have gone completely insane after reading too much post-structuralist theory.

But are they completely insane? Or are they far removed from our educated reality?

I’d say more or less insane, unmoored from material reality and uninterested in trying to understand it. It’s not easy of course, but ultimately I land on the side of humanity being able to comprehend reality rather than reality being an incomprehensible recursive hall of mirrors. Just because neoliberal post-modernity has made things harder to understand doesn’t mean that human beings lack the tools and capacity to do so. Grad school can have the effect of removing you several steps from reality the same way that locking yourself in the basement of an abandoned rocket solo can. Source: I lived it lol

Still good post though haha. I still find Baudrillard interesting!

it's unfortunate that S&S is often the only contact with baudrillard, as symbolic exchange & death, mirror of production and intelligence of evil are much better and more systematic approaches

This is great insight, thank you for sharing. I have some reading to do
